Fed Fire Service Unveils “ FASAPP,” Fire Alert System Mobile Application

Minister of Interior Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd) has commissioned a Fire Alert System Mobile Application (FASAPP) app to enhance operations of the nation’s Federal Fire service.

Performing the unveiling ceremony during the workshop and enlightenment program on enforcement of fire alarm and extinguishing equipment regulations in Abuja, Dambazau said the FASAPP app development was a testimony to the Federal Government’s determination to improve and modernise the operation of Fire Service

“unveiling of FASAPP is another testament of a determination of the Government in ensuring Zero tolerance to poor fire safety management in Nigeria,” the Minister stated

Dambazau, who was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent secretary, announced that the Fire Alert System Mobile Application could be downloaded using the code *735*3*300 # or from Google play store.

The Minister itemised the capabilities of the Application as follows: “Public can press the reported fire button to alert the nearest fire service; It will send fire prevention tips to the public at fire critical time such as in the morning; It will enable Government turn out private fire engine nearest to the distress call location,

Others are; It will assist the public to buy genuine fire extinguisher, It will assist Government to enforce quality and prevent fire device from being use for criminal purposes; It will assist Government to block economic loopholes in Fire service.”

The Minister also stated that the SMOKCOMM, a device that detect smoke and automatically called the nearest Fire Service, has been revamped and its sales and supply opened up to break monopoly and encourage healthy competition.

The Controller General Eng. Joseph Garba Anebi, noted that the app achievement was made possible by the upgrading of the National Fire Data Repository Center (NFDRC) which was established to store data, where FASAPP is domiciled.

The CG also informed the public that the upgrading of the NFDRC was in line with the Federal Government Policy on Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

He further said this infrastructure has the capability of (1)creating over 20,000 job opportunity ranging from vendor, refiller, repairer and shipping dispatch etc, ( 2) creating over 10,000 jobs for Youth employment in Fire Service for policy enforcement (3) increasing Internally Generated Revenue by over 10 Billion Naira annually for both States and Federal Government (4) Attracting 10 Billion US Dollars foreign direct investment.

Mr Benson Olatunji the Chief Executive Officer of 2TOC Solution who are the technical partners in FASAPP and SMOKCOMM revamping, gave assurance on the effectiveness and reliability of the Application as well as the continual support of his company.

Enlightenment on fire regulations was also to encourage youth employment and boost internally generated revenue. The event was attended by State Fire Service Directors, MDAs, Security Agencies, Fire equipment vendors and importers and other stake holders. Ugo Hua

SO WHAT IS 🔥FIRE?
FIRE is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products.

In order to protect yourself, it is important to understand the basic characteristics of FIRE

CHARACTERISTICS OF FIRE 🔥
1. 🔥 FIRE IS FAST: In just two (2) minutes, a fire can be called life threatening. In Five (5) minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

2. 🔥 FIRE IS DARK: Fire produces gas/smoke that makes you disoriented and drowsy. Instead of being awakened by fire if you are already asleep when it starts, you may fall into a deeper sleep, ASPHYXIATION (suffocation) is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a 3:1 ratio. Please know that Smoke kills faster than Fire.

3. 🔥 FIRE IS HOT: Heat and Smoke from fire can be more dangerous than the flames. Inhaling the superhot air can sear our lungs.

FIRE 🔥 Can be caused primarily by one of the 👉 points below:

Common Causes Fires
1. Faulty Electrics are a very common cause of fires and include loose wires and antiquated or faulty equipment. You need to ensure that fixed electrical equipment is maintained on a regular basis and annual Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) should be undertaken.

2. Flammable or combustible materials represent a danger to your household or place of work e.g. Ur baking shop. Every body should prioritise fire safety when undertaking risk assessments, and this is crucial in premises that hold any flammable or combustible materials or substances that must be stored appropriately stored and disposed of correctly.

3. Human Error represents a common cause of fires in homes, be it the incorrect use of electrical equipment, burning food or leaving cooking unattended in the kitchen as well as lack of proper care or knowledge of procedures around flammable or combustible liquids and materials. Fire safety training is invaluable to avoid this.

4. Negligence may not seem a great deal different from human error but tends to be the result of sloppy or careless behaviour, or not following rules, regulation or correct procedures, from anybody who should probably know better. Examples include the blocking or covering of machinery and equipment which requires venting thus causing overheating, not correctly disposing of cigarette ends, incorrectly storing flammable items – even paper – and overloading plug sockets. Again, robust fire training is imperative.

5. Arson is a common cause of fire around business premises, which can be particularly prone to vandalism. Such fires can rapidly spread if there are no proper fire control systems. If suitable, homes should install fire shutters, fire 🔥 alarms and sprinkler systems to protect their house and properties as far as possible; and deterrents such as CCTV and gating can deter potential vandals.

HARMATTAN /DRY SEASON AND FIRE 🔥

It sounds like twin right? We all know harmattan/dry season comes with most fire 🔥 occurrence in History both home and abroad, locally and also in international scenes, which we are all familiar with the recent ones happening world wide and even within.

FIRE 🔥 as defined by Prof. Prince Mike Ikukpolati "Is when what ought not to be on fire 🔥 is on fire"
It sounds funny right. We Scientist see Fire as a chemical reaction that combine with some elements in right proportion to give us Heat 🔥 and Smoke. Many see Fire as calamitous, some with mixed feeling of fear, inferno and blaze; some something dreadful and not supposed to be identified with as though our greatest enemy.

Fire as we all know is very important for us, in short without it we cannot survive. It is also like water which is vital element for our living. For our ordinary lives, it takes part by helping us cook our food, our culinary dishes, home-made delicacies, even cakes and other luscious foods are made possible with the help of a controlled fire. It is also one form of our entertainment as in “Fireworks”. Another of its wonders is by providing light. At night when everyone decided to party; and beach time, bonfire beautifully illuminates the whole place. Thus making the whole event warm and inviting.

These are just few uses of fire in our lives. However despite its many uses, its beauty and qualities, when untamed can cause fatalities, injuries and destructions to anyone or anything it comes in contact with. It can therefore be termed "A good servant and a bad master".

That is why it is of utmost importance for us to ensure “Fire Safety” at all times especially at home.

Fire kills family of 4 in Lagos

family of four simply identified as ‘Eze’s family’ who lived at No. 13, Buraimoh street, Bariga area of Lagos was burnt to death in a fire that started in the middle of the night.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, confirmed the incident on Wednesday saying the incident which claimed the entire family occurred at about 2.48 a.m.

According to him, men of the service arrived the scene of the incident as soon as they got information about the fire, but because of the double burglary irons on the door and window of the apartment, they were unable to reach the victims in time.

“The apartment is a chemist store. The father, mother, and two children of ages five and eight were found dead inside the store. We advise that although one needs security in his or her house or business place, it should not be to the detriment of the people. Members of the family should always know the existence of their apartment whenever there is an emergency,” he said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained although some sources believe it was caused by candlelight. Other sources claim that the fire started after electricity supply was restored to the area.

WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE THROWS ACID ON YOU

The reason for this post is that so many people are getting attacked nowadays as so many evil people see acid as the punishment of sorts for whatever they feel offended by. So many victims in the aftermath have had their lives changed forever because of this. The victims, mainly women, do not have the prescience to know what is about to befall them and they most definitely would probably have fared better if someone had given them information on what to do in the event of such an unfortunate and unexpected eventuality.

What is an acid?

In chemistry, an acid is defined as a substance that turns litmus red, neutralizes alkalis, and such things; but for the purpose of this article, I will define for the layman thus:

An acid, (at least the ones usually employed for these dastardly acts) is a corrosive liquid that is the equivalent of liquid fire.

Yes, it is fire and it sometimes does more damage than fire itself. So have it at the back of your mind that an acid is just fire.

Many people know that if your clothes catch fire, you should drop, roll and try to smother the fire. But people also need to know what to do if it is acid that they have on them.

What to do if acid is thrown at you.

If you see any liquid thrown at you,(even if it's water) especially at your face (because this is usually the site targeted by assailants for maximum damage), and you don't have time to duck and dodge, do all these things in quick succession:

1.Use your hand to shield your face from the liquid coming towards you at the same time close your eyes. Flee and while fleeing from the source of the attack, (because they can throw more at you) shout for help as you flee and shout as loud as you can.

Now, this is the most important part so I have to explain before I say the next steps.

Concentrated acid is highly destructive. To give you a mental picture of what it can do, if a drop is dropped on someone's hand, it will start burning or "eating" the surface where it is dropped. If nothing is done to halt its progress, it would continue till it gets to the bone and if nothing is done still, it can "eat" away the bone as well.

This is to show you the power of what you might be dealing with.

If unfortunately you are hit by the liquid, what you do, and do fast, will determine the outcome. The key word here is WATER.

You need water, and you need lots of it.

2. As you flee, either shout for people to bring water, or if you know a water source like a pool that won't take too much time to get to like a running tap, head there, if you see shops, grab water and use, you really need water and you need it badly.

If you can get to running water, get there and put the affected part under running water you need to be under continuous running water for at least 30 mins. This might sound odd but don't rush to the Hospital. It is the things you do immediately in the aftermath that would determine how severe the burns will be. You must be desperate to save yourself and reduce future disfigurement. Water, Water, Water. The mistake that people make is that they douse water quite all right, but they douse just like a cup etc and thereafter, head for hospital. The acid will continue destroying the patient's tissue all the way to the hospital and might even spread to other parts because of the little water.

To buttress this point, Two female British teenage charity workers had acid thrown at them in Zanzibar, and luckily for them, they were not too far from the sea so they dashed to the sea to wash off and today, the only way you would know anything happened to them is probably from slight skin colour difference on the site of the acid attack.

3. Don't put anything like oils, creams, ointments etc. as this might adversely affect the treatment doctors will give you later. Water is all you need before you get to the hospital.

4. Remove all the jewelry, clothing and apparel which had contact with acid.

5. When you have done all these things, head for hospital.

Prevention is better than cure though, so:

As a note of caution,

Be wary of someone coming towards you with a cup, bottle etc.

Be aware and alert of your surroundings and of people moving suspiciously around you.

Watch out for people who might bear a grudge against you. And if you see them approaching menacingly, run and alert people around as you do so.

[PLEASE SHARE THIS & SAVE A PERSON FROM A FUTURE ACID ATTACK]

STOP DELAY IN CALLING FIRE SERVICE TO SAVE LIVES AND PROPERTY, SAYS FFS.

The fire service is particularly worried in delay in alerting the agency whenever there is notice of fire incident by an individual, group and organizations.

Therefore, the agency is of the strong view that her workforce could have done much more better though, not spirit to have known exactly, when and where a particular fire incident is about to occur and taking place and thus places the fire service at a disadvantage position and sympathy to victims of fire incident and other related emergencies and uses this occasion to call on victims to step-up their responsiveness towards alerting the nearest fire service to ensure quick response in order to avoid loss of lives and property.

This clarion call is important, in view of the fact that the calls gotten on the House On The Rock Church fire incident, was done by a sympathizer instead of the in- house fire warden that would have been timely and helped in salvaging the situation to avoid the spread of fire before the arrival of the public fire service.

It is also advisable to builders and construction companies to use fire resistant materials to discourage quick spread of fire to adjoining properties

The agency is therefore assuring Nigerians that the fire service is strategic and key in saving lives and protection of critical infrastructure in the country and advises Nigerians to avoid delay in putting up calls to the nearest fire service whenever there is a notice of fire emergency.
