COMPONENTS OF ROAD PAVEMENTS

The road components are crucial for insuring road durability, each part of the road plays a vital role in road section. Understanding these components and their functions helps in maintaining effective road performance
In general term, road pavement is applied to the whole construction of road, but the pavement can be classified as:-

A. Flexible pavement.
B. Rigid pavement.

Here is an overview of the typical structure of the road pavements.

FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS
1. Sub-base : The sub-base for a flexible pavement is laid directly onto the formation level and should consist of a well compacted granular material such as a quarry or crushed stone. Its role is to spread load evenly on the subgrade.

2. Subgrade: The subgrade is covered with a sub-base, a base course and a wearing course. The sub-base can consist of any material which remains stable in water such as crushed stone, dry lean concrete, blast furnace slag or mix macadam .
The main function of the subgrade is to give adequate support to pavement and stability under loading conditions.

3. Base course: The base course of the surfacing can consist of rolled asphalt, dence tarmacadam or dence bitumen macadam. Base course which lies below the surface may consists of crushed stone or slag.
This course ensure efficient distribution of the traffic loading and sub surface drainage.

4. Surface course : The surface course or wearing course is usually laid by machine and provides the water protection for the base layers .
It should also have non- skid properties, reasonable resistance to have good riding properties and have a good life expectancy.
Materials which give these properties include hot asphalt, bitumen macadam, dence tar surfacing.
