Some people buy shoes because they like the colour.
Others wear the shoe, walk around with it for a few minutes, bend it, feel the sole, and even ask what material was used before bringing out their money.
From outside, both shoes can look almost the same.
But after a few months, that's when the difference starts showing.
One still looks good.
The other has started tearing around the edges.
The owner begins saying, "I didn't expect this."
The truth is, the problem didn't start after buying it.
It started the day the decision was made based only on appearance.
Now let's connect this to building a house.
This is exactly what I see whenever homeowners ask me one question:
"Engineer OJ, which one is better? Stone-coated roof or aluminium roof?"
I smile because there isn't one answer for everybody.
The best roof for your neighbour may not be the best roof for your own house.
I've been on many construction sites around Benin City, and one thing I've learnt is that roofing isn't only about beauty.
It's about understanding your building, your environment, your budget, and how long you want that roof to serve you.
Some people fall in love with stone-coated roofing because of its elegant appearance.
And honestly, it looks beautiful.
From a distance, it gives that premium finish many homeowners admire.
Others prefer aluminium because they know it lasts for decades, doesn't rust, and requires very little maintenance.
Neither of them is a bad roofing material.
The problem starts when people choose without understanding what they're buying.
I've met homeowners who insisted on installing stone-coated roofing simply because they saw it on another person's house.
Nobody asked whether that house had the same roof design.
Nobody asked whether the structure was designed for that roofing system.
Nobody even asked about future maintenance.
They simply wanted the same look.
Months later, they started complaining about loose panels after strong winds because the installation wasn't done properly.
On another site, a client almost rejected aluminium roofing because someone told him it would make the house too hot.
When we sat down and discussed ventilation, ceiling insulation, roof design and airflow, he realised the roofing sheet wasn't the real issue.
Sometimes, we blame the wrong thing.
A poorly ventilated roof will still make the house uncomfortable regardless of the roofing material.
Another mistake I see is people comparing prices without comparing quality.
Someone gets three quotations.
One is much cheaper than the others.
Immediately, they believe they've found the best deal.
But when you inspect closely, you discover the thickness isn't the same.
The accessories are different.
The installation process has been reduced.
Some important finishing materials have been removed completely.
At first glance, the price looks attractive.
Later, the hidden cost begins to appear.
I've also seen contractors cut corners just to win a project.
Instead of explaining the advantages and limitations of both roofing options, they simply recommend whichever gives them more profit.
The homeowner trusts them.
After all, "Na professional be this."
Unfortunately, experience has taught me that not everybody wearing a reflective jacket knows what they're doing.
That's why I always encourage clients to ask questions.
Lots of questions.
If someone gets irritated because you're asking about roofing sheets, thickness, accessories or installation methods, that's already telling you something.
A good professional won't be afraid to explain.
Another area many people overlook is maintenance.
Some homeowners believe that once the roof is installed, the work is finished forever.
Not really.
Leaves can block gutters.
Debris can collect inside valleys.
Small issues can become expensive if ignored for years.
I've climbed roofs where a simple cleaning would have prevented water from finding its way into the ceiling.
Instead, the owner ended up repairing ceilings, repainting walls and replacing damaged fittings.
All because a small problem was ignored.
I've also noticed people focusing only on the roofing sheets while forgetting the people installing them.
Honestly, even the best roofing material can disappoint if installed by inexperienced hands.
I've seen wrong screw/nail placement.
Poor alignment.
Improper flashing.
Weak finishing around ridges.
By the time the rainy season arrives, everyone starts blaming the roofing material.
Meanwhile, the real problem was workmanship.
Whether you choose stone-coated roofing or aluminium roofing, proper installation matters just as much as the material itself.
One thing I always tell homeowners is this:
Don't build your house based on trends.
Build based on what works for your house.
Every project is different.
The roof slope is different.
The environment is different.
The budget is different.
The homeowner's priorities are different.
That's why I don't like giving one-size-fits-all answers.
I prefer looking at the building first.
Understanding what the client wants.
Then recommending the option that truly suits the project.
Sometimes it's aluminium.
Sometimes it's stone-coated roofing.
What matters is making the right decision for the right reason.
At the end of the day, roofing is not something you replace every two or three years.
It's one of the biggest investments in your building.
Take your time before deciding.
Ask questions.
Compare more than just the price.
Understand what you're paying for.
Because when the rainy season comes, your roof won't remember how much you saved.
It will only perform according to the quality of the material you chose and the quality of the people who installed it.
