One thing construction has taught me:

You don't tell the weather what to do.

You can't tell the rain to wait because you want to cast concrete.
You can't tell the sun to reduce because your boys are on site.

The weather does what it wants.

What you CAN do is plan around it.

As a firm, we don't complain about weather. We work around it.

We schedule critical outdoor works early.
We have a Plan B for indoor works during heavy downpour.
We protect our materials because rain will not pity you.

Yes, rainy season is tough. It's the most unfavorable time for us. Work is slower. Costs go up. Timelines get stretched.

But projects still have to move. Clients still have deadlines.

We can't stop the rain. We can only be prepared for it.

*That's the difference between wishing and building.*

How do you handle weather delays on your site?

I came for a routine inspection yesterday.

Project is at finishing stage. Painting done. Tiling done. Everything looks fine...

Until I tried to open one of the doors.

It stopped halfway. Could not open to 90 degrees.

I checked the second door. Same issue.

I called the door installer.

"Oga, the door is okay na. E dey open."

Yes, it opens. But not WELL.

If a door can't open to 90 degrees, you can't carry furniture inside. You can't have free movement. It looks neat from afar, but it's a problem for the person living there.

This is why supervision matters.

An artisan will do the work and call it "okay" because it is standing.
A supervisor will check if it is WORKING as it should.

We removed it and corrected it.

*Lesson: On site, "it is done" is not enough. It must be done RIGHT.*

At Heo-construction, we don't just build to look good. We build to work well.

Have you seen this on your project before?

Went to the store.
Counted everything.
1 roll of binding wire MISSING.

Storekeeper: "Oga, I no know o!"

No CCTV. No trace. Just gone. 💨

This is the part of construction they don't teach you in school.

It's not just cement and blocks.
It's managing people and materials.

Lesson learned: If there's no record, there's no accountability.

Have you ever experienced this on site? How did you handle it?

Anyone can see cement and blocks. It takes a trained eye to see the ERROR that will cost millions tomorrow.

This eye didn't come in one day. It came from years of books, years of drawings, and years of practical site sweat.

Don't joke with experience. It saves lives.

I walked into one of my sites yesterday.

Noise. Dust. And two artisans shouting at each other.

The plumber.
The tiler.

What happened?

The plumber was fixing his pipes and broke a few tiles on the wall.

Now the tiler has to redo his work. Again.

Two professionals. Both right in their own way. Both angry.

So how do you settle this?

You don't shout.
You don't take sides.
You make them understand they are on the SAME team.

I told them: "We are not building pipes. We are not laying tiles. We are building a HOME."

The plumber pays for the extra tiles, the tiler does the patch, and we all continue work.

This is the part they don't teach you in Project Management textbooks.

No theory can prepare you for managing people.

*Experience does.*

On a construction site, safety is not optional. It is paramount.

I saw once again today why we insist on it. A casual visitor brushed it off as "I will not stay long."

But accidents don't need long. They need one second of negligence.

A slip. A falling object. An exposed rod.

This is why we enforce safety regulations for EVERYONE on site, worker or visitor.

If you have no PPE, you have no business on site.

Safety first. Always.

The Small Fight That Almost Cost Us Big

Yesterday on site, two of my workers almost came to blows over a small provocation. Just a harsh word while mixing mortar.

As a contractor, I quickly realized something: How you settle disputes on site is EVERYTHING.

That small misunderstanding, if I had ignored it, could have led to injuries, a divided team, and ultimately, delay in our timeline and goals.

I called them together immediately, listened to both sides, and resolved it. Work continued in peace.

Lesson: On a construction site, you are not just building structures, you are managing people. Don't ignore the small cracks in your team — they become big structural failures.

Have you experienced this on site before? How did you handle it?
