FOUNDATION DESIGN PRINCIPLES 002
EXCAVATION
1) In construction, there are different types of excavations, their work method, standard range of depth and design requirements.
2) According to functional requirements, they are: Top-soil Excavation, Trench Excavation, Pit Excavation and Basement Excavation.

3) According to Work Method, we have Manual Excavation and Mechanical Excavation.

4) Quantities to be excavated are measured in cubic metres, except in Top-soil Excavation where the quantity is measured in Square meters.
The unit price for 1 cubic metre ranges from 2200 to 3500 depending on labour market of the area for the project construction.

4) Top Soil Excavation simply involves removal of soil that sustains plant and green growth. It's depth should not be less than 100mm and shouldn't exceed 250mm.

5) Trench Excavation reveals the area which the walls of the building will be established.(Like when Esther see bleach) The width of the trench excavation should be at least 3 times the size of block to be used.

6) Pit Excavation is also know as Column Base or Pad Excavation. What determines the depth at which a column base will be dug is the Soil Bearing Capacity Test. With the samples gotten at the site through the use of an auger(a tool used in boring holes into the soil to get soil samples) determines the depth of the foundation, which on a stable land ranges from 1000m to 2000m depth.

7) Basement Excavation is costly and to minimize the cost is advisable to use the mechanical form of Excavation. Always remember that an offset/setback of at least 600mm backward is required from the basement walling.

Projects are capital extensive. Factor your work methods well before doing a bidding. Most Client won't want to give it a thoughtful reasoning that things are getting more expensive each day.

Where the work method(alteration) changed as a result of clients choice, please demand for Variation analysis in respect to the cost of the project.

Normalize following this principle of staircase design.
1) Make sure your staircase has a reinforcement pad base where the load of the stair is transmitted safely to a foundation.

2) Constructing a staircase without a reinforcement base is a bad technique which defers the quality and durability.

3) The Minimum depth for a reinforced concrete staircase base is 500mm (blinding thickness inclusive)

4) The standard staircase tread and riser should be Tread should not be less than 300mm; Riser should not be more than 150mm.

The Minimum foundation depth (that's the least or smallest foundation deepness) of a building near a matured tree is determined by using the formula below:
Foundation Depth = D/H

Where:
D means Distance from the center of the tree like to the building line

H means overall height of the tree.

Once the foundation depth is gotten from applying this formula, its very hard for the tree to cause problem to the building.

This is how the westerners build the buildings near a tree and the structure still stands the test of time.

CONCRETE DESIGN
Concrete is a granular(i.e. having different materials) building material which consists of cement paste, fine aggregate(sand) and coarse aggregate mixed in a specified and required amount(mix ratio).

Fresh concrete should always be used or placed within 30 minutes of mixing to prevent any undue drying out.

Tips:
1)Under no circumstances should more water be added after the initial mixing of concrete.
2) The initial setting time of concrete is 30 minutes.
3) Grade mixes of concrete are: C7.5, C10, C15, C20, C25, C30, C35, C40, C45, C50, C55, C60, F3, F4, F5, IT2, IT2.5, and IT3.

Where C = Compressive Characteristics
F = Flexural
IT = Indirect Tensile

Next about Concrete:
Concrete grades, mix ratios and it's usage/application.

FOUNDATION (FND 001) Design Principle

Main Objective of Foundation Design:
Is to ensure that the structural loads are transmitted to the subsoil(s) safely(without causing any injury or life), economically(not consuming a lot of resources) and without any unacceptable movement (UNEVEN SETTLEMENT) during the construction period and anticipated building life.

TIPS:
1) When pouring or casting the foundation footing, the thickness of the footing must be equal to 1/3 (i.e One-third) of the trench width(that is, the thickness must be equal to the distance between the external/outside wall and the side of the trench)
For example: a trench width of 450mm, the thickness of the foundation footing must be One-third of 450mm which is 150mm.

2) The width of the foundation trench must exactly be 3 times (thrice) the sizes of block to be used for even distribution of the block wall load.

3) Singly reinforced mat or beams can be placed or laid on strip foundation trenches where the amount of tensile load exceeds concrete's own tension.

4) The soil bearing capacity must at least be confirmed to exceed the loading pressure.
Soil test should be taken to engineering labs to ascertain if the soil strata or a particular sub-soil exceeds or meets the soil bearing capacity.

If a test result shows that a soil bearing capacity of 200KNM (Kilo Newton Metre) is required to carry the imposed load on the soil, such soil strata should be meet when excavation is ongoing.
On no account should a lower soil strata been used even if it means digging up to 2m to 3metres to get such strata required to carry the imposed load.
Be Mindful of your Foundation because 90% of buildings collapse as a result of faulty or poor foundation design.
