Solar Panels Don’t Love Heat; They Love Light

The Fact:

Many people believe that the hotter the sun feels on your skin, the more electricity solar panels produce. In reality, the opposite is true. Solar panels work on light (photons) - not heat - and they actually perform better when they stay cool.

Solar panels are rated at 25°C, and for every degree the panel temperature rises above this, efficiency typically drops by about 0.3–0.5% per °C. On extremely hot days, high temperatures can quietly reduce power output even when the sun looks intense.

That’s why bright, clear mid-morning sunlight can sometimes produce more usable energy than the scorching 2:00 pm sun on a 42°C April afternoon in Zamfara. Strong sunlight plus lower panel temperatures equals better performance.

Bottom line:
☀️ Solar loves clear skies and strong light - not extreme heat

We recently energised a school here in Gusau with a 17kWp/16kW/32kWh Solar PV System. Powering the loads in the school, including a massive computer/CBT room.
Constant power supply is not a luxury for an educational facility; it's a necessity.

=> 17kWp (DC) of Solar array made up of 32 Units of Jinko JKM530M-72HL4-TV
=> 16kW (AC) Inverter made up of 2 units of Itel Energy IPV-8K48T
=> 32kWh of Battery Storage made up of 2 units of Itel Energy IPL51314Y

The system has provided the client not only with a 24/7 power supply but also with complete independence from the Grid.

Since we have full remote monitoring enabled, we will be bringing you actual performance data soooooon

Zamfara: More Than Just Farmlands, It's Nigeria's Next Solar Power Hub!

Did you know Zamfara State isn't just an agricultural giant, it's a solar goldmine? Our latest blog post reveals why the state has unparalleled potential to lead Nigeria's clean energy revolution.

Here's why Zamfara is uniquely positioned:

=> Unmatched Sunshine: Get ready for this — solar panels in Zamfara can generate 38% MORE energy annually compared to coastal regions! That means faster ROI for homes and businesses.

=> Vast, Open Land: Thousands of square kilometers perfect for massive solar farms, even alongside agriculture.

=> Massive Energy Gap: Solar is the fastest, cheapest way to power communities that have been off-grid for decades.

=> Agricultural Transformation: From solar irrigation doubling crop yields to cold storage cutting post-harvest losses by 30-40%.

This isn't just potential; it's a blueprint for economic growth and energy independence.

Itel Energy has made lots of noise in terms of marketing in recent months. They have products that are affordable and look quite impressive for their price ranges. There have been lots of positive reviews from Installers.
So, we decided to test the waters with a small system.
We got the Itel Energy IPV-4K24U Pro. The 4kW Hybrid inverter would be paired with the Itel Energy IPL-25200X 5kWh Lithium battery.
We will have them fed by a 3.7kWp array made up of 7 units of 530w Jinko PV modules.
The system is for an office space.
We will give updates after installation, testing, and commissioning.

What Crayfood Can Teach Us About Solar Power

Crayfood runs identical fast-food outlets in Zamfara and Bayelsa.
Both consume the same amount of energy — 132 kWh/day.

But here’s the twist👇

In Zamfara, a 24 kW solar array powers the branch perfectly.

In Bayelsa, the exact same system struggles. Why?

Because Bayelsa receives fewer Peak Sun Hours (PSH) — just about 4 hours daily, compared to 5.5 hours in Zamfara.
That 1.5-hour difference means Bayelsa needs 37.5% more solar panels to generate the same energy.

☀️ Location determines performance — not just the equipment.

Learn more about Peak Sun Hour, its implications, and why it is a fundamental metric in solar sizing — read the full post on our blog:

The Powerful Influence of Peak Sun Hours (P.S.H.)

• A major mistake in the Nigerian solar industry is adopting a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Installing a system size (kWp) proven in Abuja or Zamfara into a humid region like Port Harcourt or Bayelsa virtually guarantees underperformance.

• Two systems with the same components and the same energy demand will have vastly different results due to location differences.

• The primary cause of this failure (barring demand differences) is the variation in Peak Sun Hours (PSH), also known as Equivalent Sun Hours (ESH).

Understanding Peak Sun Hours (PSH):

• Definition: PSH is a foundational metric measuring the amount of usable solar energy available in an area daily.

• What it is: The equivalent number of hours per day when your solar panels receive maximum solar radiation (standardised at 1000 W/m², or AM1.5). It accounts for Low-intensity sun in the morning or evening and cloud cover.

• What it is NOT: It is not the total number of hours the sun is visible in the sky.

• Calculation: Solar Insolation (Wh/m²/Day) is divided by the standard irradiance (1000 W/m²) to obtain PSH

Why PSH Varies Across Nigeria:

PSH creates a clear north-south gradient across the country, primarily due to two factors:

1. Latitude: Locations closer to the equator receive sunlight at a more direct angle, leading to generally higher and more consistent irradiance. More potential for high PSH.

2. Climate:
o Cloud Cover & Rainfall: Dense clouds block direct radiation, causing irradiance to drop significantly. Regions with long rainy seasons (like the South/Coastal areas) have lower PSH.
o Humidity & Atmospheric Moisture: High water v***r scatters and absorbs solar energy, reducing the intensity of light that reaches the ground, leading to consistently lower PSH in coastal regions.

THE SOLAR BUYERS' CHECKLIST: THE 3 NUMBERS YOU MUST KNOW

"I need a 5kVA system." It sounds like a simple request, but relying on just the inverter size is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when going solar.

The inverter's size only tells you what your system can power, but it says absolutely nothing about how much energy it can generate or store.

To understand a system's true power, you need to know all three numbers:

1. 🔌🔌The Inverter (kVA): Your system's peak power output.
2. ☀️☀️The Solar Array (kW): The total power your panels can generate.
3. 🔋🔋The Battery (kWh): How much energy your system can store for nights and cloudy days.

Two systems with the same inverter size can have completely different capabilities and costs💰💰.

Don't get fooled by a single number. Get the full story and learn what to ask your installer. Read the full post on our blog: https://greenterms.ng/the-3-numbers-you-need-to-know-before-you-go-solar/
