Advice I Wish Every Young Electrical Engineer Could Hear

When I look back at my journey in electrical and electronics engineering, I realize that getting the certificate was only the beginning.

The real learning started when I began working on actual projects.

There were times I made mistakes. Times when a job didn't go exactly as planned. Times when I had to go back, ask questions, study more, and find a better solution.

And honestly, that's part of the journey.

If you're a young electrical engineer or technician starting out, here's one thing I'd like you to understand:

Don't be in a hurry to become an expert. Be committed to becoming better.

Learn how to read diagrams.

Understand electrical safety.

Learn how to use your testing instruments properly.

Ask experienced people questions.

Don't be afraid to admit when you don't know something.

And most importantly, don't sacrifice quality just to finish a job quickly.

Your reputation will grow from the small things you do when nobody is watching.

I also encourage young engineers to look beyond the classroom. Technology is changing rapidly, especially in areas like solar energy, energy storage, automation, smart homes, and power management.

Keep learning.

Keep practicing.

Keep asking questions.

One day, someone will look at your work and say, “This person really knows what they're doing.”

And when that day comes, you'll realize that all those small lessons were worth it.

To every young engineer and technician reading this: your journey may be slow, but don't stop moving forward.

Technology Is Changing the Way We Think About Power

When I started my journey in electrical engineering, I understood electricity mainly as wires, switches, breakers, and power sources.

But the more I work in the industry, the more I realize that technology is changing everything.

I remember working on a solar project where the client didn't just want backup power. They wanted to understand how their system was performing how much energy was being generated, how much was being consumed, and how long their battery could last.

That got me thinking.

Today, modern solar systems can do much more than simply provide electricity. With the right equipment, users can monitor their energy production, battery status, power consumption, and system performance.

This is why I believe every electrical professional must keep learning.

The industry is moving forward. Solar technology is improving. Batteries are becoming more efficient. Inverters are becoming smarter. Energy monitoring is becoming more accessible.

And as professionals, we cannot afford to stop learning.

The engineer of yesterday may not be enough for the problems of tomorrow.

That's why I continue to learn, research, ask questions, and improve my skills.

My goal isn't just to install today's technology.

My goal is to understand tomorrow's technology and be ready to solve tomorrow's problems.

Behind the Scenes — What You Don't See in the Finished Work

When you look at a completed electrical or solar installation, it can sometimes look simple.

The cables are neatly arranged.
The equipment is properly mounted.
Everything is working.

But what you don't see is everything that happened before that final result.

I remember working on a project where the client was eager to see everything completed quickly. I understood the excitement, but I also knew that rushing an electrical job can create problems that may not appear immediately.

So we took our time.

We measured.
We inspected.
We selected the right materials.
We checked the connections.
We tested the system.
Then we tested it again.

There were moments when we had to stop and make corrections before moving forward. It wasn't about finishing quickly—it was about finishing correctly.

That's something I've come to understand through experience:

Good electrical work happens long before the final switch is turned on.

The planning, measurements, cable selection, protection, installation, testing, and troubleshooting are all part of the job.

So when you see me working on-site, remember that you're not just seeing an electrician connecting wires.

You're seeing a professional trying to make sure that the system will be safe, reliable, efficient, and easy to maintain.

This is the side of my work I want to share more often—the real work behind the finished project.

Because sometimes, the best part of a project is the work nobody sees.

Why Quality Wiring Matters More Than People Think

One thing I've learned from working on electrical installations is that not all wires are created equal.

I remember a project where a client complained that their appliances were not performing properly. At first, everything seemed normal. The lights came on, the sockets worked, and there was power in the building.

But when I inspected the installation properly, I noticed something that concerned me.

The cables being used were not properly matched to the load they were carrying.

That may seem like a small issue, but it can become a serious problem.

When a cable is too small for the amount of current passing through it, it can overheat. Over time, this can damage the insulation, cause voltage drop, damage equipment, and in severe cases, contribute to an electrical fire.

I explained the situation to the client, recommended the correct cable sizes, and we made the necessary corrections.

After the work was completed, the system performed much better and, more importantly, it was safer.

That experience reminded me of something I always tell clients:

Don't choose electrical materials based on price alone. Choose them based on quality, specification, and suitability for the job.

A cable may look like just a cable, but choosing the wrong one can cost you much more in the long run.

As professionals, our responsibility is not simply to make electricity work.

Our responsibility is to make it work safely, efficiently, and reliably.

If you're planning an electrical installation, don't be afraid to ask your electrician:

“What cable size are you using, and why?”

A good professional should be able to explain it to you.

It Takes More Than Solar Panels to Build a Good Solar System

One question I hear quite often is:

“Engineer, I already have solar panels. Why do I still need a battery, inverter, and charge controller?”

I remember explaining this to a client who wanted to build a solar system. They thought buying more panels alone would solve all their power problems.

I understood their thinking. After all, the solar panel is what we see producing energy from the sun.

But here's the thing I always explain:

A solar system is a team. Every component has a job.

The solar panels generate electricity.

The charge controller helps regulate how energy goes into the battery.

The battery stores energy for when sunlight isn't available.

The inverter converts the stored DC power into AC power that most household appliances can use.

And then there's the most important part—proper system design and installation.

You can buy good-quality components and still have a poor-performing system if they're not correctly sized and properly connected.

That's why, before I recommend a solar system, I want to understand the client's actual energy needs: What appliances do they use? How many hours do they run? What backup time do they expect?

From there, we can design a system that makes sense for their home or business.

I've learned that solar isn't simply about buying equipment. It's about designing the right solution for the right person.

And that's where experience and proper engineering make a difference.

If you're thinking about installing solar, don't start with “How many panels should I buy?”

Start with:

“How much energy do I actually need?”

That's where the right solution begins.
