From raw earth to solid start - Blinding pad foundation
After excavation for a pad foundation, the next step is usually blinding (sometimes called plain concrete blinding or lean mix concrete).
Here’s how it fits in the process:
1. Cleaning & Levelling the Excavated Base
Remove loose soil, debris, or water from each pad point.
Ensure the base is level to avoid uneven settlement.
2. Laying Blinding Concrete
Purpose:
Provides a clean, stable surface for reinforcement.
Prevents direct contact between reinforcement and soil, reducing corrosion risk.
Makes accurate setting out of reinforcement easier.
Typical Mix: Lean concrete, often 1:4:8 (cement:sand:gravel) with a thickness of 50–75mm but the mix we use here is 1:2:4
Procedure:
1. Dampen the soil surface lightly.
2. Pour and spread the blinding concrete evenly.
3. Allow to cure for at least 24 hours before reinforcement work.
4. Setting Out for Reinforcement
After blinding sets, marking for the column positions and foundation outline is done precisely on the hardened surface.
