⛏️ WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO A MINE AFTER THE MINERALS ARE GONE?
One question that deserves more attention in Nigeria is this:
When a mining company finishes extracting the mineral from a site, who takes responsibility for the land afterward?
Mining creates jobs.
Mining generates revenue.
Mining provides raw materials for industries.
Mining can transform local economies.
But mining also changes the land.
So, when the ore is exhausted, the real question becomes:
What are we leaving behind?
A responsible mining operation should not simply extract the mineral and walk away.
The mined-out area should be progressively rehabilitated through appropriate measures such as:
🌱 Re-vegetation and restoration of disturbed land
💧 Proper drainage and erosion control
⛰️ Stabilisation of dangerous slopes and excavations
🚧 Securing hazardous pits and abandoned workings
🌍 Restoration of land for suitable post-mining use
👥 Consideration of the affected host communities
📋 Proper environmental monitoring and compliance
And this is where responsible mining becomes more than just a slogan.
Mining should create value without creating a permanent environmental burden.
Nigeria has enormous mineral potential.
But our success should not be measured only by how much mineral we extract.
We should also ask:
How much value did we create?
How many people benefited?
What happened to the community?
And what did we leave behind after extraction?
That is the conversation we need to keep having.
