Power is the cornerstone of accelerating economic development, and one of the best indicators of a strong economy is a long-life expectancy, which is associated with improved access to healthcare and a good standard of living. The low life expectancy of 54 years in Nigeria today is a result of the country's generally subpar standard of living and lack of basic utilities. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress alone. The direct damage costs to health are estimated to be between $2–4 billion per year by 2030.
