UNSUSTAINABLE ALUMINIUM COMPOSITE PANEL PRACTICE IN NIGERIA✅
In my journey across Nigeria in search of a better and more reliable system for the fabrication and installation of Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP), I made a striking discovery most cladding installations lack proper standards. While ACP remains a popular choice for modern architectural façades due to its beauty and versatility, the quality of work in many projects falls far below acceptable benchmarks.
During my observation, I noticed several recurring issues that compromise the integrity and durability of these installations. These include:
Improper subframe design, leading to poor load distribution and panel instability.
Incorrect fixing and fasteners, which often cause loosening or detachment over time.
Poor fabrication practices, such as inaccurate cutting and bending, resulting in uneven panel alignment.
Lack of proper waterproofing and sealing, allowing moisture infiltration and long-term structural damage.
Absence of system design, where installations are done without technical drawings or engineering guidance.
These shortcomings collectively lead to defects such as panel deformation, water leakage, discoloration, and premature system failure. Beyond aesthetics, they raise serious safety and maintenance concerns.
To move the industry forward, Nigeria urgently needs to adopt standardized practices in ACP fabrication and installation. This includes proper training for fabricators, strict quality control, and adherence to manufacturer and engineering specifications. With these measures in place, we can achieve façade systems that are not only visually impressive but also durable, safe, and built to global standards.
