“STEM is too hard.”
“STEM is for men.”
“You need a PhD to make an impact.”

Let’s rewrite that narrative.

STEM is for the curious, the creative, the problem-solvers…
If this is you, CAWSTEM is a space that says: Come as you are. Grow as you go.

CRISPR: The World’s Most Powerful Copy-Paste Tool 🧬

No, not your keyboard shortcut - your DNA.

CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, a natural immune system found in bacteria that helps them fight viruses. Scientists adapted this system into a precise gene-editing tool (CRISPR-Cas9) that can cut, delete, switch off, or replace DNA.

Here’s the science in simple terms:
• Bacteria store viral DNA as a “memory” to defend against future attacks.
• A guide RNA acts like GPS, directing the Cas9 enzyme to a specific DNA spot.
• Cas9 makes a precise cut, allowing scientists to edit genes with incredible accuracy.

And this isn’t sci-fi. Researchers are using CRISPR to prevent diseases, improve crops, and fight malaria. African labs are already exploring disease-resistant cassava and other life-changing innovations.

The future is literally in our genes.

Lights, camera… STEM!

It’s time to celebrate women who changed the world and got it on the big screen.

Here are 5 movies about incredible women in STEM that will inspire, educate, and make you cheer:

🍿 Hidden Figures: The brilliant African-American mathematicians behind NASA’s first space missions.

🍿 Contact: Dr. Ellie Arroway, an astrophysicist chasing signals from the stars.

🍿 Radioactive: The story of Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize (twice!).

🍿 Gravity: A thrilling ride with Dr. Ryan Stone navigating space and science.

🍿 Joy: While not a scientist, Joy Mangano’s engineering and innovation spirit shows STEM isn’t always lab coats, it’s solving real-world problems.

If you haven't seen them, grab popcorn and prepare for a jolly ride. If you have seen them, rewatch 😉 These films remind us: women in STEM aren’t just changing science, they’re changing the world.

🎥 Now it’s your turn! Drop your favorite movies about women in STEM in the comments, we’re always looking for more inspiration!

Season's greetings and a happy new year in advance!

18/12/2025

As is custom, we wrapped up the year with our Volunteers’ End-of-Year Meet, and what a joy it was!

From the Vibers in Nairobi to the Vibers in Lagos, we came together for good food, great style, meaningful conversations, and lots of laughter. It was a beautiful reminder that community is at the heart of everything we do.

We’re deeply grateful for all we’ve achieved together in 2025, and we’re stepping into 2026 excited for deeper community, greater impact, and even more moments like this.

Here’s to growth, connection, and cheers all round 🥂

Ever thought about working in renewable energy? 🌞

It’s one of the fastest-growing fields in STEM and Africa is sitting on a goldmine of potential (except this time, the gold is sunlight, wind, and innovation).

From solar engineering to data analytics, policy design to energy storage, careers in renewables are as diverse as they are impactful. The best part? You don’t need to start with an engineering degree to belong here. Environmental scientists, economists, software developers, and project managers all have a place in the green revolution.

If you’re wondering about growth? The global renewable energy market is projected to hit $2 trillion by 2030, with salaries in Africa and beyond increasing as demand for skilled professionals rises.

This is where the world is headed and where African women deserve to lead.

Whether you’re exploring, pivoting, or deep in your STEM journey, consider going green. The planet - and your career - will thank you.

No one builds alone.

Behind every thriving STEM woman is someone who once said, “You can do this.”

CAWSTEM’s mentorship programmes connect young women with industry leaders who’ve walked the path before them — guiding, sharing, and opening doors.

Because when one woman rises, we all rise.

If you’re an early career STEMer and haven’t met these tools yet, time to get acquainted!

🔹 Python — your go-to for data, AI, and automation.
🔹 MATLAB — for engineers and scientists who love precision.
🔹 R — because every statistician deserves a best friend.
🔹 Power BI — storytelling with data is power.
🔹 Canva (yes, Canva!) — because communicating your work beautifully matters too.

Knowledge isn’t just power, it’s visibility.

If you can design an experiment, you can change the world.
But where do you start?

Here are five core research methods every STEM woman should have in her toolkit:

👉🏾 Experimental Design — the backbone of scientific discovery. How to set up controls, variables, and reproducibility.

👉🏾 Statistical Modelling — from regression to machine learning, it’s how you make sense of messy data.

👉🏾 Survey Research — understanding people’s experiences, especially in social and health sciences.

👉🏾 Case Studies — zooming into one real-world situation to uncover patterns.

👉🏾 Computational Simulation — testing scenarios that would be too costly or risky in real life.

Each method gives you a lens to see the world differently. Together, they turn questions into breakthroughs.
