Oil Pumps: The Heart of Your Engine's Lubrication System
Oil pumps play a vital role in maintaining the health and efficiency of an engine. In this blog post, we'll explore the function, importance, and key maintenance aspects of oil pumps to ensure optimal engine performance.
Understanding the Role of Oil Pumps
The oil pump can be located either in the oil pan or mounted to the front of the engine. Its primary function is to supply oil to cool, clean, and lubricate the various moving parts within the engine. The pump is usually driven by the crankshaft, creating suction to draw oil from the oil pan through a strainer.
How Oil Pumps Work
Contrary to common belief, an oil pump does not create oil pressureāit simply moves oil from one place to another. Oil pumps are positive displacement pumps, meaning the volume of oil exiting the pump equals the volume entering it. The output volume is proportional to the pump speed, increasing as engine RPM rises.
Oil Flow Process:
The pump draws oil from the oil pan through a strainer.
Suction created by the pump moves the oil through the oil filter.
The oil flows through various engine passages before returning to the oil pan.
The Creation of Oil Pressure
Oil pressure is generated by the resistance encountered as oil flows through the engine's passages. These passages restrict the flow, causing pressure to build:
Smaller passages: Increase oil pressure due to higher resistance.
Larger passages: Decrease oil pressure due to lower resistance.
Factors Affecting Oil Pressure
Bearing Clearances:
Excessive clearances reduce resistance to oil flow, increasing the volume of circulating oil but decreasing oil pressure.
As engines wear, clearances naturally increase, which can lead to reduced oil pressure.
Oil Viscosity and Temperature:
High-viscosity oil offers more flow resistance, resulting in higher oil pressure.
Low-viscosity oil flows more freely, reducing oil pressure.
Oil temperature also plays a role.
