The World’s First 3D-Printed School

In Malawi, the world’s first 3D-printed school shows how technology could help deliver buildings faster, with less waste and lower environmental impact, while addressing critical infrastructure gaps across Africa.
Built by 14Trees in the Salima District, the project demonstrates how innovation can accelerate access to safe, durable, and sustainable learning spaces for growing communities.

What makes it stand out:
- Rapid Construction
The classroom walls were completed in just 18 hours using large-scale 3D concrete printing technology, a process that would normally take days to complete using conventional construction methods.

- Reduced Material Waste
The printing process uses only the material needed, which helps unnecessary resource use and reduces waste.

- Lower Environmental Impact
Utilizes proprietary cement ink that lowers the overall environmental footprint by more than 50% compared to traditional building materials.

- Durable & Scalable Design
The technology offers a faster way to deliver quality schools and housing in regions facing major infrastructure gaps. UNICEF estimates Malawi alone needs about 36,000 additional classrooms.

- Local Skills & Job Creation
The project also supports local construction teams while creating opportunities for new technical skills in digital construction.

What if buildings could cool themselves naturally?

The Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, shows how powerful passive design can be. Inspired by termite mounds, the building stays cool without relying heavily on conventional air conditioning, using up to 90% less energy than similar buildings.

Highlights:
- Biomimicry Cooling System
Fresh air flows naturally through the building while warm air escapes through chimney-like vents.

- Thermal Mass Design
Concrete and masonry absorb heat during the day and release it at night to help regulate indoor temperatures.

- Smart Shading & Daylighting
Shaded façades, large windows, and skylights reduce heat gain while maximizing natural light.

Completed: 1996
Architect: Mick Pearce in collaboration with Arup
Eastgate Centre proves that some of the smartest solutions can come directly from nature.

Today's Sustainability Highlight 🌍 🏡

Recognized as the first commercial building in West Africa to achieve a 4-star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), One Airport Square, Accra, Ghana, is a landmark development featuring a distinctive, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly design that reduces energy consumption by approximately 30% compared to typical buildings in Accra.

Key sustainability highlights include:

- Energy Efficiency: The building’s design utilizes a concrete facade with horizontal overhangs to provide shade, significantly reducing solar heat gain and lowering air-conditioning demand.

- Passive Design & Lighting: A central atrium allows for maximum natural daylighting and facilitates natural ventilation to keep the building cool.

- Water Management: The structure features a rainwater harvesting system used for irrigation and toilets.

- Sustainable Site Integration: The building is designed to interact efficiently with its surroundings, maximizing natural elements for thermal comfort.

Completed in 2015, the project stands as an example for sustainable commercial buildings in West Africa.

Healing Beyond Medicine

Nature has always been part of healing
Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore was designed with that idea at its core, blending gardens, fresh air, water, and sustainable design into a healthcare space that feels more human, calming, and connected to life.

What makes it stand out:
a. Nature-Centered Healing
Gardens, green courtyards, rooftop farms, and water features create calming spaces that improve patient well-being and recovery.

b. Naturally Ventilated Spaces
Large openings, shaded walkways, and smart airflow strategies reduce reliance on air conditioning while keeping spaces comfortable.

c. Cooling Through Water & Landscape
The hospital uses ponds, greenery, and landscaping to naturally cool the surrounding environment and improve outdoor comfort.

d. Biodiversity Integrated Design
The campus attracts birds, butterflies, and aquatic life, transforming the hospital into a living ecosystem within the city.

e. Energy & Water Efficiency
Efficient systems help reduce energy and water consumption while supporting long-term environmental sustainability.

f. Designed for People & Community
Public gardens and community spaces make the hospital feel more welcoming, open, and connected to everyday life.

Today’s Sustainability Highlight 🌍

Green School South Africa.
A school designed to educate children to be environmentally responsible and socially conscious global citizens through the way it’s built and how it operates.

What makes it stand out:
- Sustainability-Focused Learning
Students learn about ecology and sustainability through hands-on activities that connect them directly with nature while building core academic skills.

- Designed for the Local Climate
Shaded walkways, natural ventilation, and carefully oriented buildings help keep spaces comfortable during hot weather, using less energy.

- Built with Local & Natural Materials
The campus uses locally sourced timber, earth, stone, and reclaimed materials that fit naturally into the environment and reduce transport emission impact.

- Regenerative Water Systems
The school treats and reuses its own water, while rainwater and river water support irrigation.

- Clean Energy Powered
Renewable energy systems help the school produce more electricity than it uses.

- Healthy & Non-Toxic Construction
The project avoided harmful construction materials and prioritized eco-friendly alternatives healthier for people and the environment.

Africa is warming 1.5× faster than the global average…
But the real crisis is not just the climate.

It is what it is doing to our buildings.

Most structures across African cities were designed for a climate that no longer exists.
And that mismatch is quietly creating risks we can no longer ignore.

From overheating homes to flood-damaged foundations and rising energy costs, the built environment is already under pressure.

So the real question is:
📌 Are our buildings ready for the climate that is already here?

We broke this down in detail in the full article.

28/04/2026

The future of real estate in Africa is changing faster than most people realize.

Today, buildings are no longer judged only by design and location but by something far more important:
♦️ Climate resilience.

Investors, lenders, and tenants are now asking:
- Will this building survive climate shocks?
- Is it energy efficient?
- Does it meet ESG expectations?
- Or will it become a stranded asset?

The shift is already happening across global markets…
And Africa is next.

The good news?
There are clear strategies to stay ahead of this change.

We explored them in this article.
