A raft foundation (also called a mat foundation) is a type of shallow foundation that spreads the load of a structure over a large area by using a thick reinforced concrete slab that βfloatsβ on the soil.
πΉ What is a Raft Foundation?
A raft foundation is essentially a continuous slab of concrete that covers the entire footprint of a building. Instead of using isolated footings under columns, it supports all walls and columns together, distributing loads evenly across the ground.
πΉ When is it Used?
Raft foundations are typically used when:
The soil has low bearing capacity (weak or compressible soil)
There are heavy structural loads
The building has closely spaced columns
Itβs necessary to reduce differential settlement
Basement construction is required
πΉ Types of Raft Foundations
Flat Plate Raft
Uniform thickness throughout
Suitable for light loads
Beam and Slab Raft
Includes beams under the slab for added strength
Used for heavier loads
Cellular (Box) Raft
Hollow box-like structure
Reduces weight and improves rigidity
Pile-Supported Raft
Combines raft with piles
Used when soil is extremely weak
πΉ Advantages
β
Distributes load over a large area
β
Reduces differential settlement
β
Suitable for weak soils
β
Can act as a ground floor slab
β
Economical when many columns exist
πΉ Disadvantages
β Requires careful design and analysis
β Higher initial cost compared to isolated footings (for small buildings)
β Not suitable for very uneven soil conditions without improvement
β Difficult to repair after construction
πΉ Basic Construction Steps
Site preparation and excavation
Compaction of soil and laying hardcore
Blinding concrete layer
Waterproofing (if required)
Placement of reinforcement steel
Formwork installation
Pouring of concrete slab
Curing of concrete
