Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) and taking governance to the grassroots.

Mr Okpebholo made the commitment on Monday during a meeting with APC members from across the 18 local government areas of the state at the Government House, Benin.

He expressed appreciation to party members for their support and emphasised the importance of unity within the party.

“I want to let you know that the party is our party. We don’t have any other party than APC, so we are taking the governance to the grassroots so that whatever is from the top will also go down to the bottom,” he said.

He assured that his administration would continue to ensure that governance reached the grassroots, stressing that development and opportunities must flow from the state level down to the wards.

The governor also said the appointment of 4,000 special assistants (SAs) was not an issue, noting that the victory of the APC was a collective achievement.

”Appointing 4,000 SAs is not an issue at all because we all worked for this victory; the victory does not belong to Okpebholo alone,” he said.

Earlier, the APC state chairman, Jarret Tenebe, commended the governor for what he described as efforts to reposition and strengthen the party since assuming office.

Mr Tenebe said the APC had become more active and stable under Mr Okpebholo’s administration, adding that the governor had created opportunities for party members to participate in governance and bring the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

He stressed that the current administration had also made provisions for the party to operate more effectively, including plans for the party to have a vehicle for its activities.

He said several the APC faithful had been considered for appointments as special assistants, attributing this development to the governor’s understanding of both politics and governance.

He also said that the governor had approved the appointment of 25 special assistants in each of the 192 wards across the state.

He explained that the meeting with ward chairmen and other party members was convened to communicate the criteria and guidelines for selecting beneficiaries of the appointments.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has reaffirmed her support for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying her position is based on his character, competence and capacity.

Ezekwesili stated this in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Monday, while discussing Nigeria’s political future, democratic development and the need for institutional reforms.

The former minister said her support for Obi was not driven by ethnic, religious or other primordial considerations, but by the leadership criteria she believes should determine voters’ choices.

She recalled backing Obi during the 2023 presidential election after assessing the leading candidates based on their ability to provide effective leadership.

“In 2023, I made it very clear that, using the criteria on which I see leadership either fail or succeed to govern well… the other two candidates score considerably lower than what you would assign to former Governor Obi, and so I was going to stand with Governor Obi,” she said.

Ezekwesili added that her assessment had not significantly changed.

“I don’t think that anything has really significantly changed,” she said.

However, she cautioned Nigerians against making the 2027 political debate solely about Obi or any other individual, arguing that the country’s challenges require broader institutional and political reforms.

Seyi Makinde, has declared that he would not emerge as a “godfather” to the administration that would succeed him in 2027, insisting that whoever is elected governor of the state must be accountable to the people. Makinde, who made the declaration on Monday at the Hijrah 1448/2026 luncheon, said the 2027 governorship candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi and Hon. Muftau Open Salawu, would be responsible to the people of Oyo State if elected. The governor spoke at the luncheon held at the Banquet Hall, Agodi Gate, Ibadan, where he also took a swipe at politicians seeking to succeed him for allegedly making him the focus of their campaigns instead of presenting their programmes and development blueprints to the electorate. Makinde, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term as governor, said it was unnecessary for governorship candidates to continue attacking his personality and administration when they should be explaining to the people what they intend to do differently if elected. He said, “I will never be a godfather to the coming Oyo State government. Bimbo Adekanbi and Hon. Open Salawu will be responsible to the people of Oyo State.” The governor said he had observed that some of the governorship candidates campaigning across the state had devoted considerable attention to criticising his administration, despite the fact that he would not be on the ballot as a governorship candidate in 2027. According to him, rather than making him the centre of their campaigns, the candidates should tell the electorate their plans for the state and explain how they intend to address the challenges confronting the people. “I have seen several guber candidates talking around and abusing me. I don’t know why. I have done my best, and I am no more contesting as the governor of the state. “They should rather abuse Hon. Bimbo Adekanbi and stop abusing me in those places; I wasn’t perfect,” he said. Makinde acknowledged that his administration might not have been perfect, but maintained that its overall performance in office had earned it a positive assessment from the people. He, therefore, challenged Oyo voters to subject all governorship candidates to scrutiny by demanding specific programmes, policies and measurable commitments from them before deciding whom to support in the 2027 election. The governor said political campaigns should be about ideas and the future of the state rather than personal attacks or attempts to discredit a government that would soon complete its constitutional tenure. He urged residents to confront politicians with questions about their plans whenever they visit their communities to canvass for votes. “When next they come to campaign to you, tell them to list their intentions and blueprints instead of abusing Makinde,” he said. Makinde further argued that attempts by political opponents to demarket his administration should not prevent the electorate from assessing the candidates based on their competence, policies and capacity to govern. He said the people should not be carried away by political rhetoric but should demand concrete answers from those seeking their mandate. “My performance in government has rated me high. No matter what they want to use to demarket me, in their attempt to demarket me, I put it to you people to demand from them what they have in stock for the people of Oyo State,” the governor added. The governor’s remarks came against the backdrop of increasing political activities in the state ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with political parties and their candidates already positioning themselves for the contest. He maintained that his administration should be judged on its record, while those seeking to succeed him should equally be judged on what they intend to offer the people. He stressed that the ultimate authority in determining who governs Oyo State after the expiration of his tenure would rest with the electorate. The governor therefore urged residents to look beyond campaign rhetoric and personal attacks, insisting that the 2027 contest should be centred on competing visions and practical solutions for the state.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has debunked reports in some sections of the media suggesting that he was lobbying to be appointed Director-General (DG) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC). The Minister, who reiterated his unflinching support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said he did not need to be the DG or even a member of the President’s Campaign Council to ensure that the President wins massively in Rivers State and the FCT. A report in some sections of the media had listed the FCT Minister among top party chieftains and government officials allegedly lobbying for or being mentioned for the position of DG of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. However, reacting through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister described the report as false, saying he had not at any time discussed the leadership or membership of the Presidential Campaign Council with anyone. He said, “I am outside Nigeria, resting and relaxing after spending over 30 days commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing ones, especially those scheduled for commissioning in December and January next year. “When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT. “Therefore, I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT.”

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, on Monday appealed to voters in Osun State to repay their longstanding support for him by voting for the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Najeem Salam, in Saturday’s election. Atiku, who spoke at the ADC grand rally held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, recalled his previous political engagements with the people of Osun, saying the state had consistently supported his political aspirations. He said his relationship with the people of the state went beyond politics, noting that he had previously visited Osun to campaign for the incumbent governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and later returned during his presidential campaign, when, according to him, Osun voters again gave him their backing. “Each time I stood here, you gave me your vote. I cannot forget that because your daughter is in my house,” Atiku told the crowd. The former Vice President said he had personally returned to the state to appreciate voters for their previous support and seek their backing for the ADC candidate in the August 15 governorship election.

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu walks to his office and eats only once a day, while dismissing claims that the President lives an extravagant lifestyle. Adedeji made the remarks during an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, while responding to questions from journalist Seun Okinbaloye about the lifestyles of political office holders amid Nigeria’s economic difficulties. The NRS chairman defended Tinubu’s lifestyle as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs and growing economic pressures, amid debates over government spending and the lifestyles of public officials. According to Adedeji, Tinubu usually walks from his residence to his office and only uses a vehicle when he is heading to the airport. He further claimed that the President eats only once daily and had not travelled outside Nigeria in the previous three months. The NRS boss was also questioned about reports concerning the number of Escalades allegedly attached to Tinubu’s convoy. Responding, Adedeji questioned the basis of the concern, arguing that the President could afford such vehicles and should not be portrayed as living extravagantly because of their use. He said, “Mr President goes from home to office on foot, not even driving except when he is going to the airport. I don’t know where you see the convoy. Before he became president, what is he riding? Makinde said the candidates should focus on telling Oyo voters what they would do if elected instead of making his administration the centre of their campaigns. Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has banned all forms of orchestration, celebration, or ‘signing-off’ activities by final year students in connection with final examinations on all university campuses/premises, with immediate effect. A statement by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, said on Monday that the management decision was predicated on recurring incidents of chaos, violence, vandalism, and disruption of academic and administrative activities associated with such events. He said, “Management is also concerned about the infiltration of unauthorised persons onto campus during these activities, which poses a serious threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and University property. In fulfillment of its statutory obligation to maintain order, protect lives, and safeguard property, Management considers such activities unacceptable and a breach of University regulations”. The Varsity spokesman warned that any student found to be involved in, organising, or participating in any form of “signing-off”-or related activities shall be liable to severe disciplinary sanctions, including but not limited to rustication and withdrawal in line with the Students’ Handbook. According to him, “Non-Students/Outsiders: Any person who is not a bonafide student or staff of the University found on University premises in connection with such activities shall be arrested and prosecuted for breach of peace, trespass, and disorderly conduct”. The University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, in an internal memo to the university community, had already communicated to the students to focus on their academic responsibilities and also asked staff, students, and members of the public to report any planned or ongoing act of misconduct to the Chief Safety Officer, Dean of Student Affairs, or the nearest University Authority for immediate action. The University, under the watch of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bond Ugochukwu Stanley Anyaehie, remains committed to providing a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, and research in the University. Management will not tolerate any action that undermines this commitment.
