Why the Cat and the Rat Will Never Be Friends Again
Long ago, in a peaceful Idoma village of
Oglewu in Ohimini, Cat and Rat were the best of friends. They played together, hunted together, and even shared the same little hut under a mango tree. Everyone in the village admired their bond, especially because it was rare to see such different creatures living in harmony.
One day, the village elders announced that there would be a great journey to the king’s palace to receive blessings. Only a few animals were allowed to go, and food would be scarce on the way. Cat and Rat agreed to travel together and take turns protecting their only food: a basket of dried fish.
On the first night, Cat stood guard while Rat slept. The next night, it was Rat’s turn. But the smell of the dried fish was too tempting. Rat ate one, then another, and before dawn, all the fish were gone. He covered the basket with leaves and pretended nothing had happened.
When Cat woke up and found the basket empty, he was furious. Rat lied and said a wild bird came and stole it. But Cat didn’t believe him. He sniffed around and found fish scales on Rat’s paws. Betrayed and heartbroken, Cat chased Rat into the bush.
From that day forward, Cat swore never to trust Rat again. And Rat, out of guilt and fear, learned to run fast and hide well.
Moral Lesson
Selfishness and greed destroy trust, true friendship is built on honesty and love. Once trust is broken, it’s hard to rebuild.
