A tubing spool is a component in a wellhead system located between the casing head and the production tree. It provides structural support and connection points, and allows safe pressure containment, sealing, and control over the tubing string and associated flows.
Functions and Roles:
(1) Supports and suspends the tubing hanger/tubing string.
(2) Provides sealing/pressure containment.
(3) Interfaces with surface equipment.
(4) Provides ports/interfaces for instrumentation and control lines.
(5) Supports safety and maintenance.
Design Features:
(1) Material and strength: High alloy steel compatible with the well environment (corrosion, H2S, CO2) and rated for appropriate pressure and temperature.
(2) Seal/packing system: Metal or elastomeric seals, ring seals, and gasketed interfaces to maintain the pressure boundary.
(3) Ports/crossovers: Side ports for sensing (pressure, temperature), annulus access, chemical injection, control lines, and testability before hookup.
(4) Compliance: API 6A
(5) Safety/redundancy: Redundant sealing paths, backup barriers, and designed to allow maintenance without full system depressurization.
Applications:
(1) Onshore/offshore wells.
(2) HPHT wells.
(3) Wells with instrumentation/chemical injection needs.
(4) Wells requiring frequent interventions or workovers.
(5) Injection/disposal wells and enhanced oil recovery/operations.
Advantages:
(1) Reliable pressure containment and sealing: Safe operation and prevention of leaks.
(2) Modularity and standard interfaces: Simplifies installation, maintenance, and upgrades.
(3) Multiple access points: Ability to instrument, inject, monitor without extra fittings.
(4) Structural robustness: Handles mechanical loads, vibration, and weight of piping/tubing.
(5) Ease of maintenance/testing: Ability to pressure-test, isolate, and service associated equipment.
(6) Longevity and durability: Good materials and correct design help resist fatigue, corrosion, and wear.
