At Ocean TuniCell we are excited to contribute to shaping the future of medical treatments! 🫀🥼

Researchers and clinicians used a TUNICELL hydrogel, together with from Novamatrix®, and human adipose tissue to engineer stable hydrogel-fat grafts in vivo. They studied both in situ and ex situ crosslinking strategies for the hydrogel and adipose tissue extracts. Results show promise for an fat-hydrogel formulation that crosslinks in situ. This could be very beneficial for applications in soft tissue reconstruction, using a minimally invasive procedure to reduce risk and discomfort to the patient, as well as cost benefits for systems.👩‍⚕️

This spring we have had the pleasure of hosting two students, Kristine Trøgstad and Hallvard Jacobsen, from the University of Bergen, Department of Biological Sciences. They have spent a total of 150 hours with us working in several steps throughout our production line, from harvesting at our farm in Øygarden, preparation of , product quality assessments and finalizing our TUNICELL products. 🌊🥼⚗️

“It has been both interesting, educational and fun to tag along on the production line from the harvesting of tunicates and all the way to the final product. An especially fun experience was to enter the clean room where everything has to be completely sterile and clean”, says Kristine.

“I find it very exciting that by harnessing local marine resources, we have the opportunity to create valuable products for biomedical research and medical applications. The cellulose found in our ocean holds immense potential to drive breakthroughs in healthcare which I find very inspiring. I have found it fascinating to see the teamwork in Ocean TuniCell and how they constantly improve ways to process, clean and produce this remarkable material out of tunicates", says Hallvard.

Can TUNICELL help people see again? 👁️ A healthy cornea is essential for the eye’s function in seeing the world around us. Its main role is to protect the inner eye against mechanical damage, UV radiation and microbes.

Injuries or disease of the cornea may lead to blindness, which is an issue that impacts tens of millions of people around the world according to the World Health Organization. Cornea transplants are a solution for this issue, but there is a worldwide lack of donors with, on average, only 1 cornea available for 70 patients. With transplantation there is also a risk of rejection, poor survival of the explanted tissue, and high costs.

To address this challenge, researchers have turned to tissue engineering to use cells and materials to repair the damaged corneas. The Norwegian company Regenics AS recently published a study in the Journal of Burn Care & Research demonstrating promising results using their marine wound dressing. We are excited to see the progress and happening in of burns, and that our TUNICELL hydrogels are performing well!
