Great news for the Reach Remote concept which has been developed by Reach Subsea together with Kongsberg Gruppen and Massterly:

Wilhelmsen group has acquired a 21% stake in Reach Subsea ASA and will be a strategic partner to commercialise the Reach Remote concept, bringing Reach Subsea into new industry verticals and geographical regions.

Reach Subsea is on track for the delivery of its two first Reach Remote unmanned surface vehicles (USV) in 2023.

By 2025, the company’s ambition is to provide a full portfolio of subsea services from a low-emission, cost-effective, remote, and autonomous fleet.

These USVs will serve as mobile power banks, data centres and communication modules for underwater ROVs, with the USVs operated from Massterly’s Remote Operations Centres.

Wilhelmsen has acquired a 21% stake in Reach Subsea ASA. This further positions Wilhelmsen in the renewable value chain along with recognising the substantial potential in Reach’s innovative remote subsea concept.

We recently met with the editor of Moderne Transport , in the building where our first Remote Operations Centre (ROC) will be located.

Both the container feeder Yara Birkeland and the two Ro-Ro vessels that ASKO have contracted will start commercial operations this summer, and we are planning a two-year testing and approval phase with some crew members on board before the vessels will be unmanned. The crew will continue to do their job from the ROC and will also offer services to other vessels; enabling the energy transition and new ways of working.

Massterly is a proud partner in the three-year EU-funded research project "VesselAI" together with 12 other companies with high competence in the maritime and ICT domains.

The project aims to unlock unexploited potential in the maritime sector related to increased safety, energy optimization and emissions reduction. VesselAI will contribute by developing, validating and demonstrating a unique framework for extreme-scale data and artificial intelligence services for the maritime domain.

By combining digital twins, cloud computing and high-performance computing with maritime domain knowledge, the consortium will accelerate the ongoing digitalization of the shipping industry and draw more value from the data processed.

Kongsberg Maritime and Massterly have signed contracts with the leading Norwegian grocery distributor ASKO to equip two new vessels with autonomous technology, and to manage their operations at sea. The fully electric ships will replace 2 million kilometres of truck transport, saving 5,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Massterly has contributed to this article, displaying the benefits of adopting autonomy technology for the maritime industry and also discussing what can be achieved within our global regulatory framework

Fully autonomous vessels can be built with lower investment cost as there is no need for crew accommodation, crew safety equipment, air condition, sanitary systems or bridge. Both fully autonomous and automated vessels offer lower operational cost as crew onboard may be reduced or fully replaced by....
