WHICH ONE IS MORE PROFITABLE BETWEEN BROILERS AND LAYERS

In poultry farming, many people ask which type of chicken is more profitable broilers or layers. The truth is, each has its own advantages and profit depends on the system a person sets up.

✓ BROILERS

Broilers are chickens raised for meat. They are sold between 6 to 8 weeks. What’s impressive about broilers is how fast they grow and how quickly they can be sold, allowing fast returns on investment. However, they require heavy feeding and strict hygiene to grow healthily.

✓ LAYERS

Layers are hens raised for eggs. They take longer to start laying — about 18 to 20 weeks. But once they start, they lay almost daily for many months, which provides steady income without waiting for maturity. After their laying period, they can also be sold as spent layers for meat.

♦Conclusion
If you're looking for quick cash, broilers are better. But if you want consistent, long-term income, layers are more profitable. If possible, raising both broilers and layers together may bring more balanced and increased profits than focusing on just one.

One hard truth I’ve learned in poultry farming is this: if you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it.

Many farmers simply provide feed and water daily and hope for good results. But they have no idea how many birds are laying, how much feed is being consumed, or how many eggs are being produced.

I once asked a farmer, “How many crates are your birds producing now?”
His reply? “Ehn, they dey lay well. Sometimes four or five crates.”
No records. No precise figures. Just vague excitement.

That’s how losses begin.

If you don’t track feed intake, how will you know if there’s wastage?
If you don’t monitor egg production, how will you spot issues early?

Record-keeping in poultry is not optional — it’s essential for survival.

Know how much feed your birds consume daily.

Track their water intake.

Record egg production.

Monitor mortality rates.

Check body weight regularly.

Layers are not like broilers you sell in six weeks. You keep them for over a year — and small errors can lead to big financial losses.

If you're serious about profit, you must be serious about data.

🐓🌿 9 Natural Tips to Boost Your Chickens’ Laying 🌿🐓

Healthy, happy hens will reward you with plenty of fresh eggs. Follow these easy steps to keep them productive naturally !

1️⃣ Fresh, clean water
Change it every day, providing about 0.5 L per hen, and more during hot weather.

2️⃣ Reduce stress
Keep a stable routine and avoid sudden loud noises or new animals without a proper introduction.

3️⃣ Provide calcium freely
Offer crushed oyster shells or eggshells in a separate feeder so they can self-regulate.

4️⃣ Allow enough space
At least 0.5 m² per hen inside, and 1 m² outside, to avoid stress and aggression.

5️⃣ Parasite checks
Inspect hens monthly and use natural powders or worming treatments as needed.

6️⃣ Keep things clean
Clean nesting boxes and perches often, removing droppings to prevent ammonia build-up.

7️⃣ Support during molting
Increase protein levels to 20–22 % and give protein-rich treats like mealworms.

8️⃣ Balanced feeding
A feed with 16 % protein, along with herbs, vegetables, and insects, is ideal.

9️⃣ Manage light carefully
Provide about 14 h of gentle light, especially in winter, to keep laying steady.

🌟 With these mindful steps, your chickens will stay healthy and keep those eggs coming ! 🥚

🐣 Chick Sexing by Feather Shape
A practical, non-invasive method for early identification:

• Female chicks: Primary feathers grow faster than covert feathers
• Male chicks: Primary and covert feathers grow at similar lengths
• Works best on certain fast-feathering breeds
• Observe feather curve—females show a two-step shape, males a single curve
• Ideal during the first few days after hatching
• Useful for small-scale backyard flocks and breeders alike
