“Rai language”—but which one?

Rai is a broad ethnic identity connected with many distinct communities and mother tongues, including Bantawa, Chamling, Kulung, Thulung, Khaling, Dumi, Koyu, Bahing, Athpahariya, Lohorung, Wambule, Puma, and others.

These are not simply different accents of a single language. Each has its own vocabulary, grammar, history, speakers, and cultural traditions.

In this article, I explore why it is more accurate to speak of Rai languages in the plural—and why recognizing each language matters.
