Important Update from Helius Therapeutics

We are disappointed to announce that as of 11 March 2026, Helius Therapeutics Limited has entered voluntary administration, marking a difficult moment for the team and the wider medicinal cannabis industry.

The decision follows sustained commercial pressures within the challenging regulatory and commercial environment for medicinal cannabis. As part of the process Helius Therapeutics will close its East Tamaki manufacturing facility.

From the beginning, our mission has been to improve access to evidence-based medicinal cannabis treatments for New Zealand patients. We are proud of the role we have played in and hope the industry will continue evolve and benefit Kiwi patients across New Zealand.

We are deeply grateful to the healthcare professionals, partners, and most importantly our patients who have supported us throughout the journey.
At this stage, operations will continue in a limited capacity.

Patients should check with their dispensing pharmacy regarding stock availability. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]

The voluntary administration does not impact the clinic business operating under Cannaplus, which continues to operate independently and provide prescribing and patient care services across New Zealand.

Did you know terpenes have the potential to protect and support your health? Take alpha-Bisabolol, Guaiol and beta-Caryophyllene for example:

alpha-Bisabolol has potential to act as a neuroprotectant and anti-inflammatory compound. You will find this terpene in chamomile, already well known for its calming properties, and skincare and sensitive-skin formulations.

Guaiol has potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and is often found in skincare formulations. Guaiol terpenes can be found in resin-rich plants such as cannabis and even wood, which is why you may recognize the woody and slightly rosy aroma.

beta-Caryophyllene is unique when it comes to body response – activating the CB2 receptor in the endocannabinoid system, which is associated with inflammatory and immune response (without psychoactive effects). It also adds the “spice” you taste in cloves, cinnamon and oregano!

Have you ever wondered why some medicinal cannabis smells familiar? That’s because terpenes, such as Limonene, Caryophyllene, and Linalool are very common in other plants!

The aroma found in citrus plant and fruit comes from Limonene; a bright, zesty, uplifting terpene you may also find in perfumes and household cleaners, thanks to its antibacterial properties.

Have you found pepper, spice, and earthy notes? Caryophyllene is often found in cloves, cinnamon, oregano, basil, and even rosemary. Thanks to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, it is often used in fragrance and skincare products.

Linalool is soft, floral and naturally present in lavender, mint, coriander, cinnamon, and many other flowering plants. Thanks to its calming properties you will often find Linalool in lotions, soaps and other skincare.

Heading overseas for the holidays? Here are a few tips to ensure you have everything you need to travel with your prescription:

Domestic Travel: No restrictions carrying your medicines in your carry-on or checked luggage – there may be restrictions on vaporisers with lithium batteries, so best to check with the airline before you fly!

International Travel: Most countries prohibit the importation of medicinal cannabis, however there are some in the pacific region who will allow a person to bring their prescription with them: Australia, Rarotonga, and Cook Islands.
Make sure you have the following information available before you fly:
• the product has been prescribed to you by a medical practitioner or authorised prescriber where appropriate
• you have a copy of the prescription OR a letter from your prescriber stating that you are being treated with the product
• you declare the product on your passenger arrival card
• you carry the product in its original labelled container

Some countries limit the quantity of medicinal cannabis you can bring with you, for example Australia has a 3-month supply for THC products, New Zealand only has a 1-month limit for THC products (and 3-months supply for CBD products). It is always best to check these and any other restrictions apply, such as the links below:

What happens if you fail a Roadside Drug Test?

Roadside Drug Testing has begun (as of December 15th 2025) in Wellington, with a full roll out throughout New Zealand in the following months. If you test positive to 2 tests at the roadside, you will be banned from driving for 12 hours, and sent an infringement notice in the mail. Once you have received the infringement notice, you can then apply for a medical defence.

Things to remember:
- You can apply for a medical defence through the New Zealand Police website (link below!)
- Don’t forget your prescription has to be valid for the period during which you were tested.
- You will get confirmation if your defence has been successful.
- If you have any concerns or questions about your prescription you should speak with your prescriber.
