🚧 NOW HIRING – EXPERIENCED EXCAVATOR OPERATOR 🚧

HGM Construction is seeking an experienced excavator operator to join our team in Canterbury.

The successful applicant will:
• Be comfortable working in hill and steep terrain environments
• Have proven experience operating 1–25 tonne excavators
• Be proficient in the use of attachments including augers, breakers, pile drivers, drill rigs etc.
• Take pride in delivering high-quality workmanship and contribute positively within a team environment
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety and equipment maintenance

Experience in drilling, piling, and steep terrain operations would be highly advantage.

Required licences:
• W, T, and R endorsements are essential
• Class 2, 4, and 5 licences would be an advantage

The challenge sees firefighters from around the country climb Auckland’s Sky Tower in full firefighting gear — all for an amazing cause.

HGM is proud to have been engaged by LPC to precast 220 ECOncrete Coastalock units for the reclamation project.

These innovative units are a fantastic alternative to traditional quarried rock, designed not only for durability but also to create habitat within the structures—supporting marine life and enhancing the surrounding ecosystem.

A great step forward for sustainable coastal infrastructure.

Lyttelton Port Company is installing ecologically engineered (eco-engineering) habitat units to encourage marine life at the new reclamation.

Approximately 220 ECOncrete ‘Coastalock’ units will be installed in cluster patterns to create intertidal and subtidal habitat. The first cluster, consisting of twenty-two units, weighing 3.5 tonnes each, have been installed along the eastern side of the reclamation seawall.

20 Years today since we started HGM Construction 🎂🎉

Back in 2006, our hardworking founder, Hamish Murrell backed himself with a small excavator and a drive to do things differently. At just 19, he was working evenings and weekends, taking on jobs from Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula to the city, building relationships and a reputation through hard work, grit, and word of mouth. There was no big plan, just a clear mindset to find solutions and take on challenges that others might have shied away from.

Over time, that mindset has shaped what HGM is today. From complex post-earthquake work on the hills to specialised infrastructure and environmental projects, the business grew by sticking to what we do best as a team. When Hamish’s wife, Katy Murrell, joined the business 10 years ago, she brought a new level of leadership across compliance, financial management, and health and safety, helping strengthen the foundations for sustainable growth of the company.

Through all the challenges and milestones, one thing has remained the same, this is a family business at heart. For Hamish and Katy, alongside their children Alice and Charlie, HGM carries the same family values that both Hamish and Katy were brought up with and this has carried through to the way they run the business, look after the team, and how they value their clients and long-term suppliers.

We are incredibly proud of what’s been built over the past 20 years and grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey.

Driving piles for this large residential build in French Pass 🌊

This project involved installing 81 x 7m timber piles, forming the foundation for a substantial coastal home. Using our Hitachi ZX130-7 paired with the Hooper pile driver, the team was able to efficiently pick up each pile with the grapple and drive it directly into place.

This setup allows the operator to handle and install piles from the cab, significantly improving speed, accuracy, safety, and overall site efficiency.

Another solid project delivered by the HGM team in one of the most incredible locations in the country. 🙌🏻

Another superb project delivered for City Council

The HGM Construction trail crew completed works on the Cass Bay to Pony Point walking track, improving both safety and accessibility for the community.

The original track was steep and challenging in sections, so a full realignment was carried out to reduce the gradient and create a smoother, more user friendly path. 🏞️

Great work by the team on another well executed project. 👏

Building safe and durable structures for the community is what we do best, and this is one of the projects we’re proud of. 💯

The footbridge replacement at Francis Reserve was delivered for City Council from start to finish by our team. The old bridge was carefully removed, in line with the project’s environmental management plan.

We installed new reinforced concrete pile foundations, prefabricated the bridge at our HGM workshop, then craned the new structure smoothly into place on site. 🏗️

A high-standard build delivered with care and precision, creating a durable new asset the community can rely on for years to come.
