Easy-Dag History & Development
The first known sheep holders were made in the 1950s, usually by farmers. The old saying that "necessity is the mother of invention certainly rings true in this story.
Early in the 1960s a Southland farmer, Mr Ned McLeod of South Hillend, developed a machine that included a lead-in race and a clamping (manual) device which held a sheep upright while it was being crutched or dagged around its tail. Ned patented this machine in 1965 and called it a 'Crutcheasy'.
Ned had the Crutcheasy made and marketed under contract by a local engineering company - Heenan Engineering Ltd. They were mainly sold in Southland but some did go north.
A Gore company was possibly the first to close the clamp using an air cylinder and other engineers followed suit.
I, Geoff Wilson, worked for Heenan Engineering and was instrumental in helping setup the production line. By 1993, I had my own engineering company and was asked to make the Crutcheasy under contract. A number of these machines, now electric/air powered, were made.
In 1997, Geoff Wilson Engineering Ltd gained written authority from Mr Ned McLeod to use the principal design of the Crutcheasy and I developed the EASY-DAG with approximately 30 improved design features. Some improvements were from suggestions made by farmers and most were made to enhance the ergonomics for the Easy-Dag users.
