Had a callout last week to a tiny home out in the country, heat pump not working.

Sefton went out to check it and found dormant cluster flies in the outdoor unit. When the weather turns cold they look for a warm, dry spot to shelter, and the outdoor unit casing is exactly that. They'd caused enough damage to blow the PC board. It had also lost some gas along the way.

With both issues going on, it made more sense to replace the whole outdoor unit rather than just the PC board. Cost the customer a lot more than a simple repair would have.

Logan did the install, with a fantastic view of the snow on the Kaweka Ranges as his work backdrop.

A good reminder to keep an eye on your outdoor unit over the colder months, cluster flies love to move in when it's not running.

20 August 2018, it was just us with a van and a plan to do right by our customers. Taking the time, doing the job properly, and actually look after people along the way. Never treating you like just another number.

Fast forward to today and Jake and Logan have joined the team, and we've been privileged to keep heaps of Hawke's Bay homes & businesses warm in winter and cool in summer ever since.

🥶 Frosty week out at Jake and Jodie's place in Waipukurau.
The paddocks were white, the horse and the sheep stood there hunkered down against the cold, and it was the kind of morning that makes you not want to get out of bed.

Jodie works from home so she gets to enjoy views like this every day (and feel the cold every day too).
Jake installs heat pumps for us here at AirControl and still hasn't put one in his own home. Tradesman's house, and all that. We're going to sort him out😉

Handy having Jake living rurally though, he's often out and about around Waipuk and the wider CHB area installing and servicing heat pumps for the locals.

Biggest mistake we see with heat pump installs? People go for the cheapest quote without asking why it's cheaper.

Sometimes it's genuinely a good deal. But sometimes it means an undersized unit, corners cut on the install, or no one talking you through the right option for your home.

Ever seen your heat pump blowing steam or the outdoor fan stop on a cold day?
𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 - 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻.

That's called defrost mode. Here's what's going on:

On cold, damp days, frost builds up on the outdoor unit (same way frost forms on your car windscreen). Too much frost blocks airflow, so the heat pump briefly reverses itself to melt it off - that's the steam you're seeing.

It only takes a few minutes, then it's back to normal heating. Totally normal, especially on frosty or foggy days.

The only time to worry? If it's happening every 20-30 minutes. That usually means it needs a service.
