School run. Client calls. CostX. Site visits. Sports. Dinner. Repeat. 😅

Ever wondered what a typical day looks like when you’re running your own Quantity Surveying business and trying to keep up with family life?

Here’s a little look behind the scenes at LLL Quantity Surveying...

7:30am – School run, kids sorted, dogs fed and hopefully a cup of tea before the emails begin!

8:30am – Laptop open. Emails, project updates and the day’s priorities. Work out what needs doing first and what can wait.

10:00am – CostX time. Working through quantities and project details — this is where the numbers and spreadsheets take over.

11:30am – A quick call with a client to talk through a feasibility estimate and answer any questions.

12:30pm – Lunch at the desk, dogs keeping me company, washing machine going in the background. Just the normal home-office setup!

1:00pm – Time to prepare a bank drawdown/progress report and make sure everything is up to date.

3:00pm – Laptop closed... for now! School pick-up, kids to sports, and then it’s either off to a site visit or back to the laptop depending on what’s happening that day.

5:00pm – Officially home time. Although, when you run your own business, there’s always the temptation to check “just one more email”! 😂

It’s busy, it’s a juggle, and no two days are quite the same — but that’s part of what makes running LLL Quantity Surveying so rewarding.

Quick one for anyone building or renovating (or thinking about it)

👇

If there was an online toolkit that gave you everything you need to manage your own build budget — a budget tracker, help reading builder's quotes, a variations log, checklists for every stage from consent to completion — would that be useful?

Trying to figure out whether this is something Kiwi self-builders actually want, or whether you'd rather just wing it with a Word doc and hope for the best 😅

Drop a comment — even just "yes" or "nah" helps me out.

Looking for a Quantity Surveyor? Here’s what to look for…

Choosing the right Quantity Surveyor can make a big difference to how smoothly your project runs. Here are a few key things to consider:

• Experience with residential builds — understanding how homes come together, not just the numbers

• Knowledge of local construction costs — especially important in regions like Central Otago

• Clear and transparent reporting — so you always know where things stand

• Strong communication — keeping you informed every step of the way

These are the standards I stand by in my quantity surveying business — practical, honest, and focused on giving you confidence in your project from day one.
If you’re planning a build or renovation, it’s worth having the right support in place from the start.

Something I've been thinking about lately.

Running my own QS practice in Central Otago means I don't always get the flashiest projects. My name is not on the organisation chart, no clear "next rung" to climb. Some days I wonder what my career could look like if I'd stayed inside a bigger firm, chasing the bigger jobs.
Then Monday afternoon rolls around and I'm walking out the door at 1:15pm for school cross country. Or one of the kids wakes up unwell and I just... don't send them to school. No boss to call and no explaining myself to anyone.

And here's the bit that surprises people: I'm more productive and more efficient than I've ever been. No half-day lost to a meeting. No energy spent managing up. The hours I do work, I work properly.

So it's got me wondering - are there large contractors or consultancies in NZ actually offering true flexibility, not just the line in a job ad? Because every second construction job listing I see promises "flexible working" as a perk, but promising it and building a culture where people actually use it without feeling judged for it are two very different things.

I don't have a tidy conclusion here. Complex, high-value work is genuinely satisfying, and I do sometimes miss being part of a bigger team pulling in the same direction. But the trade-off - real flexibility, real trust, no one to answer to.

Curious what others think: is genuine flexibility something you've actually found inside a larger NZ construction business, or has it mostly meant going out on your own to get it?

From early ideas to breaking ground!

I’ve been working alongside builders Hunter & Craig to help get these exciting new builds off the ground on Holloway Street in Clyde.

My role as the Quantity Surveyor has included early on construction pricing and budgeting to help bring the project together from the very beginning.
It’s so exciting to now see the ground being broken and construction getting underway!

Before long, five lucky families will be able to call these beautiful new homes their own.

I love being able to support local projects and play a part in helping create new homes right here in our community. 💛

Keeping it local

There’s something special about building and investing right here in Central Otago. Supporting local businesses means backing people who genuinely understand the region — the climate, the costs, and the way projects come together in our backyard.

When it comes to Quantity Surveying, working with someone local isn’t just convenient — it adds real value. You’re getting insight based on experience in the area, strong connections with local suppliers and contractors, and a clear understanding of what your project truly requires.

It’s about keeping work within the community, supporting each other, and helping Central Otago continue to grow.

If you’re planning a project, think local — it makes a difference.

Local knowledge matters!

When it comes to building in Central Otago, having a Quantity Surveyor who understands the local environment can make a real difference. From fluctuating material costs to the unique demands of the climate, there are many factors that need to be considered early on.

Local knowledge, like mine, helps ensure your project is costed accurately, avoids unexpected surprises, and stays on track from start to finish. It’s not just about numbers — it’s about understanding how those numbers apply to building in this region.

If you’re planning a build or renovation, working with a Quantity Surveyor who knows Central Otago can help you move forward with confidence.
