Three words to sum up our latest project....
What. a. ride.
We are so lucky to have spent the past week on Matiu - Somes Island, building a shelter for the whare manuhiri/visitor biosecurity room.
It was a completely different type of project for us. First, we had to get our materials, tools and equipment through quarantine and sail across the harbour. No nipping down the road for a box of screws if you forgot them!
Next, we had to contend with the intense and changeable spring weather. Lifting heavy timber rafters and 120kg beams and installing light-as-air lazerlite roofing all becomes incredibly difficult in 40kmph winds, and a few "surprise waves" caught us off-guard more than once.
There were some awesome moments. Our morning commute was a bushwalk, and we could see (and hear!) where the kororā/little blue penguins came in every night. Kākāriki surprised us at our front door in the morning, and geckos kept us company in the bathroom. We even got a beautiful full-size rainbow after a brutal southerly ripped through.
We'll admit it, we're really proud of this mahi, and we hope that all visitors to this beautiful taonga enjoy it for years to come.
We have lots of people we would like to thank....
🦎Taranaki Whānui and the Department of Conservation. Thank you so much for having us. We'd especially like to thank the Matiu - Somes Island DOC Rangers - ngā mihi maioha, thank you for everything you did for us.
🦎 The team from Underwater Solutions Ltd - you are such legends. Thank you for being so helpful, and for getting us (and ALL of our stuff!) to and from the Island safely.
🦎 Corey from Mitre10 Mega in Petone - first class customer service in a testing moment. Too good.
🦎 The team from Carters Paraparaumu - thanks for being accommodating as our materials went through quarantine protocol, much appreciated.
🦎 Adam from DTCE Engineering - thanks for being flexible and accommodating, especially when the weather was not, and for bringing us a desperately needed box of screws.
🦎 Kapiti Hire - thanks for supplying all our scaffolding and temporary fencing, hope you enjoy how clean they are!
