Meet Hamesh Prajapati — our Coil Production Supervisor, Auckland.

Hamesh is approaching his 5-year milestone at Easysteel, and in that time, he’s become an integral part of the Coil whānau — where the laughs are loud, the crew is tight, and the energy is always high.

He thrives in the fast-paced environment, embracing every challenge and championing team unity. Right now, his focus is on strengthening collaboration across the site — working as one team, with one goal.

Outside of work, Hamesh is a passionate foodie, spending weekends discovering new eateries with his family. His favourite meal? Mum’s roti — though spicy BBQ lamb cutlets come in a close second. He’s also diving back into competitive swimming, training hard to get race-ready again.

Congrats on nearly five years, Hamesh! Your energy, drive, and team-first attitude make all the difference.

It’s not every day you get to celebrate half a century of service—and recently, we had the privilege of doing just that with Kevin Walker, who marked an incredible 50 years with Easysteel! Here is a bit below from Kevin about his time with us:

"It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown—it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s been 50 years!

My journey began on 4th June 1975, starting as a Detailer for Fletcher Reinforcing in Palmerston North. Back then, I spent a good chunk of my time in the workshop, helping manage the cutting and bending workload, and occasionally lending a hand on the Merch side, getting steel out the door.

About 18 months in, I transitioned into Steel Sales. Everything was manual—no computers, no faxes. We relied on a cardex system to manage stock, and if you needed to check another branch’s inventory, you’d either ring them or send a telex. Our phone system had its own office (PABX), and we didn’t even have a photocopier!

A few years later, I took on the Commercial Administrator role, adding more strings to my bow. The 1980s brought big changes with the introduction of PRiME, our first computer system. I was heavily involved in loading branch stock and customer data, and training staff on the new tech.

Over the years, I’ve held a variety of roles—too many to list without risking a few yawns—but each one added to my career. I’ve been involved in Sales Training, Computer Systems Training, the McKinsey Review, and the BPCS Implementation.

Today, I’m proud to serve as Area Manager for Easysteel Palmerston North.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

The customer pays for everything we do—make it easy for them to come back.

Look after your team. When staff are happy, they greet every customer with a smile—and that makes all the difference."

The Easysteel Coil Processing - Slitting Line is a precision machining process where a wide coil of steel is unwound and passed through a set of cutting blades and spacers that are configured on twin arms to cut the steel and achieve exact widths. The slit strips pass through a tensioning pit and process and are rewound into smaller coils on our decoiler before packaging to our customers’ individual requirements. Each strip’s dimensions are tailored to specific customer requirements, making slitting a crucial step for downstream manufacturing.

We can process a range of coated and non-coated steel products in gauges between 0.35-3.5mm thickness and varying input widths up to 1525mm wide.

End users of our slit coil vary wildly but include some of the below:

Components like brackets, panels, and trim
Construction materials such as studs, framing, and gutters
Electrical and appliance parts including enclosures and motor laminations
Packaging and strapping products

Contact Easysteel for any of your Coil Processing enquiries – our Production Team, overseeing our Slitting and Sheeting Lines may be able to offer a solution to your requirement to reduce waste and improve efficiency!

Daniel Gleeson joined us at Easysteel in March as an Account Manager after a friendly transition from his previous role at Pacific Steel as our own Account Manager for the supply of reinforcing bar and wire.

Dan is a loving father to his young son, Xaedan, and partner Tash, and outside of work is a keen foodie, able to rattle off recipes and culinary advice at the drop of a hat – particularly if they involve duck from his annual hunting adventures!

Dan has promptly taken to the huge task of learning our systems and products overall, but with a particular focus on Flat Rolled Products and our Coil Processing operations, which contribute a significant proportion of our business. He has been busy integrating himself with our customers, but also with both the sales and production teams, progressing in leaps and bounds in such a short time. He has already gained praise and feedback from his managers, and we cannot wait to see how he further develops in his role and future trajectory. 🎉

Taking advantage of the beautiful autumn weather, the Trust (BCT) team of volunteers and contractors gathered at Anti Crow Hut for a full-scale renovation. The project proved to be quite the mission—once all the rotten timber was removed and various building elements were rebuilt or re-aligned, there was little of the original hut remaining. In the end, it became more a case of "out with the old and in with the new."

With the relocation and installation of additional windows, a few sheets of our steel were carried in to reclad the old window locations and ensure the building was fully weather-tight.

Backcountry Trust is dedicated to outdoor recreation and preserving New Zealand’s rich history of remote huts and tracks, powered by the boundless energy of Aotearoa’s backcountry volunteers.

Those keen to assist or donate can visit their website www.backcountrytrust.org.nz to get involved.

Supplying Strength to a Legend: Easysteel and the TSS Earnslaw 🚱

Easysteel is proud to play a key role in the restoration of one of New Zealand’s most iconic vessels the TSS Earnslaw. Affectionately known as the Lady of the Lake, she’s been a fixture on Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu since 1912 and remains the only commercial coal-fired steamship still operating in the Southern Hemisphere.

Now, more than a century later, she’s undergoing a major mechanical refit, and Easysteel is right at the heart of it. In collaboration with Farra Engineering, we’ve supplied over 11 tonnes of precision engineered steel, including six massive billets (each 500mm wide, 950mm long, and weighing 1,480kg) machined with exacting precision.

From sourcing material locally and internationally, to delivering to tight timelines, this project reflects what we do best: turning engineering challenges into enduring solutions.

To contribute to a vessel that embodies both national heritage and engineering excellence is a true honour and we’re excited to see the Earnslaw sail on, stronger than ever.

Driving Innovation, One Robot at a Time đŸ€–

Innovation is rarely easy—especially in industries built on decades of tradition. From advanced vision systems to rethinking how we work, introducing new technology can be challenging. But when it comes to delivering the best for our people and our customers, it’s a challenge we gladly accept.

Our lathe and notching operation in Invercargill plays a vital role in the supply chain for one of our key customers. Previously, this process was slow, repetitive, and carried significant safety risks.

Now, with the commissioning of our first fully robotic solution, we’ve eliminated manual handling from this step entirely—boosting safety, consistency, and efficiency.
This is just one of many exciting projects underway as we continue to modernise and automate our operations.

A huge thank you to Fletcher Building for their trust and support, Automate-X for their technical expertise, project leads Paul Murphy and Joseph V Palathingal, and the unstoppable Easysteel team led by Charissa McLean and Mike Mulligan

Jeeya Parmar is our dedicated Demand and Supply Planner based in our Auckland office. Jeeya ensures we have the right steel in the right place at the right time.

Originally from Hamilton, she moved to Auckland in 2018, where she met her fiancé, Aaqif.

In her spare time, Jeeya loves attending concerts, comedy gigs, plays, and musicals. She describes herself as an 'aspiring yogi,' though much of her time is now happily spent on wedding planning!

Since joining Easysteel in 2023, Jeeya has been a fantastic addition to our supply chain team. A big thank you to Jeeya for her commitment and hard work. We can't wait to see where her journey takes her next!
