We’re often asked how EPS responds to flame, so we filmed a quick demo using a small Formance SIP sample.

We exposed the sample to a lighter flame for 5 seconds.

What happened?

The flame didn’t continue. The EPS shrank back from the heat source and went out quickly.

This is consistent with how Formance describes the EPS used in their panels: it contains a flame retardant, is designed not to propagate fire, and pulls back from the heat source.

It’s important to remember that fire performance in a finished home depends on the full building system, including the SIP assembly, linings, detailing, installation and compliance requirements.

But as a simple visual demonstration, this is a useful way to show how the material behaves when exposed to a small flame.

Big news for smarter housing in New Zealand.

The Government has officially expanded the proposed granny flat consent exemption changes to include SIP construction.

For us at Green Abode, this is a huge step forward for healthier, more energy-efficient homes.

Even better?
Three of our ecobode transportable homes already fit within the proposed 70m² requirements.

That means more opportunities for:
• granny flats
• family accommodation
• rural living
• home offices
• energy-efficient small homes

Without compromising on comfort or performance.

We break down what the changes mean and why SIP homes are finally getting the recognition they deserve in our latest blog.

Sometimes it’s the small things you notice first.

Not the big features or the obvious design choices, but the everyday details that quietly make life feel easier.

One of our Green Abode clients said she was surprised by the lack of dust in the house. Another thing people often notice is how much quieter the home feels.

That’s the kind of feedback we love, because it speaks to what living in a high-performing home can actually feel like day to day.

A warmer home.

A drier home.

Less condensation.

Fewer drafts.

A more stable indoor temperature.

A quieter indoor environment.

And, yes, even a noticeable lack of dust.

These are the things that don’t always show up in a floor plan, but they make a real difference once you’re living in the home.

Because a Green Abode home isn’t just designed to look good.

It’s designed to feel good to live in.

Transportable doesn’t mean temporary.

And in the case of ecobode, it also doesn’t mean the home is designed to be moved around again later.

When we say an ecobode home is transportable, we mean it is manufactured at our warehouse/site, then transported to its permanent site.

Once it’s there, it’s there to stay.

This approach gives us a more controlled build environment, a more streamlined process, and less time spent building on site.

But the end result is still a real, permanent home.

Warm.
Strong.
Comfortable.
Energy efficient.
Built to perform.

Because ecobode isn’t about cutting corners or creating something temporary.

It’s about building smarter before the home reaches its final place.

A home doesn’t just cost money to build.

It costs money to live in, every single day.

Heating, cooling, maintenance and power bills all add up over time, which is why the way a home is designed and built matters long after move-in day.

One of our Green Abode clients put it perfectly:

“The inside temperature almost never falls below 18°C, even when the outside temperature is close to zero.”

That’s the difference a high-performing home can make.

A warmer, drier, more energy-efficient home needs less energy to stay comfortable. You’re not constantly trying to heat a cold house or fight against the weather outside.

The building system, insulation, airtightness, and detailing all work together to help the home perform better day after day.

Because a better home shouldn’t just feel good when you get the keys.

It should keep making sense every month after that.

Big news for Kiwi families thinking about granny flats!

The Government has announced that Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are now recognised within the proposed granny flat building consent exemption changes for homes up to 70m².

For us, this is a huge step in the right direction.

We’ve always believed granny flats should be more than just an extra room in the backyard.

They should be:
🌿 warm
🌿 healthy
🌿 energy efficient
🌿 comfortable year-round
🌿 and genuinely enjoyable to live in

That’s why we build using SIPs.

And the exciting part?

Three of our ecobode transportable homes already fit within the proposed 70m² requirements.

This opens up so many more possibilities for:
• ageing parents wanting independence nearby
• adult children needing affordable housing options
• extra accommodation on rural properties
• guest spaces
• and families wanting smarter, healthier small homes

Smaller homes can still live beautifully.

And this latest change is a positive step toward better housing options for New Zealanders.

The parts of a home you don’t see are often the parts that matter most.

Once the walls are lined, painted and finished, it’s easy to forget what’s behind them.

But that’s where a lot of the performance comes from.

The structure.
The insulation.
The airtightness.
The detailing.
The way the home is designed to hold warmth and reduce energy loss.

At Green Abode, we use Structural Insulated Panels to help create a strong, efficient building envelope from the start.

That means the home isn’t just built to look good on handover day.

It’s built to feel better to live in, long after the walls are closed up.

Because a high-performing home starts behind the walls.

EPS and PUR panels are both used in SIP construction, but the insulation core is different.

At Green Abode, we choose the right panel system based on the project, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

The goal is always the same: a warm, comfortable, energy-efficient home that performs well for years to come.

What does a high-performing home actually mean?

It’s not just about one material, one product, or one feature.

It’s about how the whole home works together.

A Green Abode home is designed to feel warmer, drier and more comfortable to live in, while using less energy to heat and cool.

That comes down to the building system, insulation, airtightness, layout, detailing and the way each part of the home is considered from the start.

Because a better home isn’t just about how it looks on handover day.

It’s about how it feels to live in every day after that.

One of our clients has now been living in their Green Abode home for 5.5 years.

When we asked about maintenance, their answer was pretty simple: the only thing they’ve had to do is repaint the cedar panels on the front of the house.

That’s the kind of feedback we love hearing.

Because low-maintenance living isn’t always the first thing people think about when they’re planning a new home, but a few years in, it really matters.

A home should make life easier, not add a never-ending list of weekend jobs.
