Maungatāpere Project - Completed

Two beautifully finished bathrooms, brought together through careful planning, skilled workmanship and a great team of local suppliers and subtrades.

The ensuite has a warm, refined feel, with walnut cabinetry, dark grey concrete basins, brushed nickel tapware and soft neutral finishes.

The utility bathroom was designed to be practical without compromising on style, using the same finishes to create consistency throughout the home.

See slide for the selections.

A big thank you to everyone involved:

Architectural design - Steve Povey Plans & Design
Building Materials from Whangarei ITM
Drain Laying by Completely Drained Ltd
Plumbing by Got Gas & Plumbing
Electrical by Mr Electri City
Gib Stopping & Painting by Precise Painting and Decorating Northland LTD
Glazing by Pane Free Glazing
Tiling by Maximus Tiling
Tapware, bath and shower from Reece Bathrooms NZ Whangārei
Bathroom furniture, mirrors and tiles from Tile Depot Whangārei

We’d also like to thank the Building Inspections team at Whangarei District Council. As with many renovations, there were a couple of surprises and variations along the way, but the team worked with us to keep the process smooth for both us and our clients.

Fully managed from demolition through to the final details, with one point of contact coordinating the entire renovation.

As we were finishing up, our clients said “You just made it all so easy!”
That’s exactly what our fully managed renovation service is there to do.

Planning a renovation in Whangārei or Kaipara? Let’s talk about your next project.

Thinking about tackling a renovation yourself?

There are plenty of parts of a renovation where homeowners can save money and get involved themselves. But there are also parts of a project that legally need to be carried out by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP).

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that some of the most common renovation questions fall into this category:

• "Can I knock this wall out?"
• "Can I make this window bigger?"
• "Can I put a ranchslider here?"
• "Can I move this exterior door?"
• "Can I open up this room to create open-plan living?"

These types of changes often affect the structure or weathertightness of your home and may require both an LBP and building consent.

The rules aren't there to make renovations harder. They're there to help ensure homes remain safe, durable, and compliant with the Building Code.

One thing we often see is homeowners getting well into the planning stage before discovering that some of the work they intended to do themselves requires consent or licensed tradespeople.

Getting the right advice early can save a lot of time, money, and frustration later on.

At Daniel Wilkinson Builders, we're always happy to point people in the right direction, whether you're planning a fully managed renovation or simply trying to understand what's involved before you get started.

Because sometimes the most expensive part of a renovation is having to do it twice.

"How hard can it be?"

Meanwhile the reality is:
Weekend 1: Demo
Week 3: Discover hidden old electrical
Month 2: Waiting for sparkies
Month 3: Living without a kitchen
Month 4: Waiting for plumbers
Month 5: "While the plumber's here, let's do the bathroom too"
Month 9: Finally painting!

We've lost count of how many phone calls start with "we thought we'd have a go ourselves first..."

Sometimes it works. Sometimes we get called when the floor is missing.

With over 30 years of renovation experience and a trusted network of Northland's best subtrades, we spot potential problems before they become delays, keeping projects moving.

Meanwhile, DIYers are waiting for the next available tradie and HOPE they're qualified 🤞🏻

A new deck taking shape in Tangiteroria

While decorating continues at our Maungatāpere renovation, we’ve been onsite with another local family building this outdoor space, ready for a beautiful 4 metre-wide stacker door from M2 Aluminium Ltd going in next week.

A big thank you as well to Whangarei ITM for supplying the timber and fixings for this project.

It’s always satisfying seeing a project move from groundwork and framing into the stage where everything starts coming together.

Renovations and outdoor spaces often overlap like this behind the scenes, with careful planning and coordination keeping each project progressing at the right time.

Follow along, we’re looking forward to sharing the next stage on this one 👍🏻

In Auckland for a few days for the New Zealand Certified Builders Association conference.

Visited Cabjaks Manufacturing and the High Performer Construction Building today.

Always valuable taking time out of the day-to-day to see new products, new systems, and new ways of building and renovating.

Never stop learning 👍🏻
