Giving Back 💛 Hummingbird Sponsorship Programme 🐦‍🔥🐦‍🔥

At Hummingbird, we believe in doing more than just business, we believe in giving back to the communities that supported us to begin with.

Our new Hummingbird Sponsorship Programme is being created to support initiatives across schools, sports, community events and good causes throughout New Zealand.

Our aim is to build long-term relationships with organisations, individuals and causes where we can make a meaningful difference.

💛 $20,000 total sponsorship funding every year
📅 Two application rounds each year (March & September)
🤝 Supporting schools, sport, community & good causes
🌱 Focused on creating lasting impact, not just one-off support

We’re currently building the online application platform on the Hummingbird website, with more details coming soon.
Applications will open twice a year:

☀️About 120 solar panels and batteries are being installed this week at the Westfleet Runanga Community Pool - making it the biggest power generator in the Northern Ward.

The initiative provides power when the electricity grid is down, and will reduce electricity costs and lower the carbon footprint.

Chairman of the Runanga Community Trust, which owns the town’s community pool, Eric Martini, said the trust was getting serious about keeping Runanga on its feet when the lights go out.

The system has been designed with extra capacity and cabling so power can be supplied to Runanga School in an emergency.

“We’re likely to be the biggest energy generator in the Northern Ward,” Mr Martini said.

“Runanga has a proud history of looking after its own.”

The council has been been allocated up to $264,000 from EECA’s Community Renewable Energy Fund. Communities are committing co-funding, and no ratepayer funding is involved. Meridian has also helped at Runanga.

☀️In 1972, when Roger Ewer first discovered the Barrytown Hall, he needed to get the key from a farmer’s wife, and it had no heating.

Fast forward to 2026, and the hall is getting 30 solar panels installed.

The initiative will strengthen community resilience by providing access to power when the electricity grid is down during an emergency or other outage.

At other times, the solar systems will reduce electricity costs and lower the carbon footprint of each building.

No ratepayer funds are being used, thanks to funding from EECA.
