We are proud to have delivered this significant project in two stages, following the approval of staged funding and a building consent covering the full development. The project involved constructing a new kitchen and dining facility while carefully integrating it with the existing Wharekai, originally built in 1919.

Work began onsite in December 2024 with the demolition of the original kitchen block, stopping at the main Wharekai hall. Following demolition, extensive earthworks were undertaken, including the removal of silt from historic river flooding and old hangi pits that had been used for more than 100 years. Site levels were also raised to better protect the Marae from future flooding events.

Stage One construction commenced in January 2025 and included the foundations and floor slab for the new kitchen and future dining area. At this stage, only the kitchen fit-out formed part of the approved funding, so the structure was designed with temporary walls to allow seamless connection into Stage Two once additional funding was secured. The fully operational kitchen was completed as part of this first stage, with Stage Two funding confirmed in August 2025.

The second stage presented the unique challenge of linking the new build into the original 1919 structure while preserving its historic character. A key focus of the architectural design was retaining the existing truss ceiling, originally built by the First Māori Battalion using native Rimu transported down the Whanganui River.

To achieve this, the existing roof and truss system was carefully propped using engineer-designed scaffolding while all supporting walls were removed. A full scaffold encapsulation was installed over both the existing and new structures to allow the buildings to be safely joined together. New footings and foundations were constructed, along with 800mm-high blockwork around the perimeter to improve future flood resilience and watertightness.

New structural portals and trusses were then installed to connect the buildings and create the new roof structure. Laminated timber beams were positioned above the original roof structure, with the historic Rimu trusses bolted into the new laminated beams and connected through to the structural steel framework.

Internally, the finishes were carefully designed to complement the original truss ceiling while delivering a fresh, modern appearance that respected the building’s history and significance.

External works included a new carpark, deck areas, and accessibility ramps connecting the Wharekai to surrounding buildings.

The project was successfully completed on schedule in March 2026.
A huge thank you to all that were involved in the project, It was an absolute honour to work on such a significant project and to be entrusted with preserving the history and legacy of the Marae for future generations.

W&W Construction 2010 Ltd is proud to have successfully completed several significant projects over the past month, including a new heath centre, Te Hā Health Care on Main Street, Palmerston North, and a revamp of the Aotea Wharekai and addition of a new commercial kitchen at the Putiki Marae in Whanganui.

This week has also marked a major milestone for the team, with 5,500m² (900m³) of concrete poured for a new handstand and structural steel works now commenced for the 50m extension at Mainfreight Palmerston North.

These achievements reflect the dedication, coordination, and hard work of our team and project partners across every stage of delivery.

"Have you ever stopped to watch a crane at work, or is that just our construction manager?" 🏗️👀

Check out this satisfying timelapse of the removal of this existing canopy. It’s not just about tearing things down; it’s about careful planning, engineering, and the steady hand of the crane operator making sure every step is executed safely.

Heavy lifts require heavy focus. Thanks to City Concrete Cutters LTD with the assist from McIntosh Cranes. On to the next phase! 👷‍♂️🔨
