Tips & Tricks for saving with Rust Medic.

In many instances, de-rusting larger objects may seem impossible or overwhelmingly expensive. With a little forethought, in many cases, de-rusting larger objects can be achieved by using a lot less Rust Remover than one would anticipate. I have created a short timelapse on how to build an extremely cheap DIY application for larger objects. This application can be designed in any shape or form to best suit the item being de-rusted. Utilizing any timber laying around the house and a waterproof tarpaulin you can de-rust your larger items requiring only the amount of Rust remover necessary to cover one side of the item being immersed. By rotating your rusty item side by side, the entire process can be completed with a minimum expenditure on Rust Removal product.

Although this is one of the most common DIY applications of Rust Medic Rust Remover we still field numerous calls asking if Rust Medic rust remover can be used to de-rust rusty fuel tanks. YES! it can.

Fuel Tank De-Rusting with Rust Medic rust remover:

The first step in de-rusting a fuel tank is to ascertain the degree of rust you are dealing with.

If your fuel tank has light to medium rust with no sign of loose flaking or debris, you can simply go straight to filling your tank with Rust Medic rust remover.

If your fuel tank has heavy rust and contains rust flaking or debris, a flush out with water will be necessary to remove as much of the loose material as possible. Swirling chains or nuts and bolts around inside a fuel tank is not advisable and will likely damage the tank further.

Please DO NOT use solvents or cleaning agents to clean your fuel tank before using Rust Medic rust remover.

There is no need to fill your tank completely with Rust Medic rust remover although this is the quickest and most efficient method. Simply fill the tank with enough liquid to completely immerse one side of your fuel tank. Leave each side to soak for at least 2-3 hours and turn repeatedly until all sides have been immersed. Extreme rust may require extended soaking times. Leaving your tank in the sun while de-rusting will accelerate the de-rusting process.

Drain your tank, but DO NOT throw away your used rust remover.

Check your tank for any residual rust.

If there are any remaining patches of rust, repeat the steps above.

If your tank is spotless, rinse with a product that will evaporate like acetone, methylated spirits or petrol. Once filled with petrol or diesel, your tank will remain rust free.

If your tank is not going to be filled for an extended period, flush with diesel to create a protective barrier over the bare metal.

Your Rust Medic rust remover can be saved once emptied and re-used. Once your rust remover has been used, do not store it in an airtight container. A container with a lid is recommended but it must be able to breath (not sealed). Rust Medic rust remover will not damage paint, petcocks, chrome or rubber seals, so most often all fittings can remain attached to your fuel tank.

If you have any doubts, please call or email for advice.

Many car and boat enthusiasts have come across this problem when restoring vehicles and boat trailers with cast iron brake calipers. Apart from looking unsightly, this usually results in reduced braking efficiency or complete seizure of moving parts. Immersing your rusty calipers in Rust Medic Rust remover takes the hard work out of rebuilding rusted calipers that have seized or require servicing. Rust Medic will not harm rubber seals or dust boots and will not damage any moving parts. Once de-rusted apply an appropriate lubricant to the slide pins and your calipers will work like new. As rust is the best etching compound to be found, once de-rusted, your calipers can be easily painted for protection against corrosion and for improved aesthetics. If the calipers are leaking brake fluid prior to de-rusting, replacing the piston seals and dust boots before re-installation is essential.

Rust Medic "Rust Remover" Concentrate mixes to the exact same product as our "Ready to Use" product, simply by adding water. Unlike competitors, we see no sense at all in shipping water globally at the customer's expense. To reduce end-user costs, shipping weights have been reduced considerably by supplying "Rust Medic" in concentrated volumes. Rust Medic concentrate mixes 1 part concentrate to 15 parts of water, creating 16 litres of ready to use product for every 1 litre of Concentrate. As an example, 5 litres of concentrate in a single bottle reduces shipping by 75 litres of water. A significant saving in freight for industrial and commercial users.
