6 things to get right when designing your coastal bach deck.

1. Width — a deck under 3 metres deep is uncomfortable. 3.5-4m feels generous.
2. Material — kwila and cedar hold up. Untreated pine doesn't survive a coastal environment.
3. Orientation relative to prevailing wind — the best view isn't always the most sheltered spot.
4. A cantilever or floating deck where the site allows — dramatically increases connection to the landscape.
5. Shade — fixed pergola, eave extension, or sail. Design it in, don't add it later.
6. Outdoor power — in the deck bench or pergola structure, weatherproof and planned.
