The team at Seladi-85 Architecture & MODN Construction set out to design and build a low-cost prototype settlement housing solution for our local communities.
The design challenges focused on:
• Utilizing readily available local building materials
• Incorporing sustainable design principles
• Using existing and basic construction skills
• Minimizing reliance on traditional structural systems
• Creating a simple modular approach to the overall installation process
• Excluding plumbing and electrical, treating it like a typical settlement dwelling
The result:
A two-room dwelling completed in just 2 weeks, at a cost of K28,000.00.
If produced on a larger scale in a controlled environment, costs could dramatically decrease, potentially to 40–50% of the current value. This makes the vision of housing displaced communities a realistic and achievable goal.
Our study of this prototype continues to fuel creative and informed improvements for future designs.
This experimental dwelling is now 2 years old. It has withstood rain and strong coastal winds without showing any signs of deterioration, proving its durability and potential as a sustainable housing solution.
