The National Airports Corporation’s Aviation Security Officers, intercepted another attempted gold smuggling at the Port Moresby International Airport around midday on Monday, 30th of March 2026.

A female passenger bound for Hong Kong was caught during security screening. She had gold coated in clay and wrapped in six plastic packs, which were concealed under her bra.

During the incident, the passenger attempted to bribe the screening officer, however, the officer firmly rejected and the passenger was immediately referred to PNG Customs for further investigation.

NAC’s Acting Managing Director, Dominic Kaumu said the NAC is determined to work with the Police, PNG Customs and other relevant organizations to address security challenges at the Port Moresby International Airport as well as other national airports to address gold smuggling.

NAC is serious about addressing this. We are investigating staff who may be involved, and they will be terminated and referred to the police when identified. We are also engaging an independent security expert to support us in reviewing our security systems for continuous improvements.” Mr Kaumu said.

So far, NAC has worked with PNG Customs to successfully install a Security Screening Machine at the International Terminal for exclusive use by PNG Customs.

Mr. Kaumu emphasized that gold smuggling is a serious national concern, and as the gatekeepers of Papua New Guinea’s airports, the NAC is determined to confront this issue with urgency and collaboration with all concerned organisations.

NAC also warns passengers attempting to smuggle gold that anyone caught will be referred to PNG Customs and Police.

Mr Kaumu also expressed his gratitude to the Aviation Security Officers who continue to perform their duty with integrity, refusing bribes and carrying out their responsibilities diligently.
