Germany’s ill-conceived decision to shut down its zero-emission nuclear plants and replace them with unreliable wind and solar power left it no alternative but to import Russian natural gas.

Russia’s contemptible invasion of Ukraine left Germany with a classic Hobson’s choice: either help fund the murderous invasion or devastate its own citizens’ economic and personal well-being. Realizing the enormous power that Germany’s need for Russian gas gave him, President Vladimir Putin cut back gas flows, driving European prices to stratospheric levels. -Gwyn Morgan

In the Philippines, coal is the primary energy source. There is no way wind or solar can replace coal as a primary energy source in an instant. A lesson from Germany's move made the country vulnerable to Russia. Philippines too can become vulnerable to China if the country cannot be independent on its primary needs. It's time we start making our own steel.

Mining in Q1 2023. The good, the bad and the ugly. All mines need to be careful as one wrong move by one affects the many. Mining have had sins in the past that continues to hunt the present and future reputation of mining both in local and global community. We take lessons from the past to be better now and in the future. Sometimes it's not an argument of what is legally right but of what is morally right.

If the MPSA was renewed legally and will expire in 2025, they will, in 2 years will need to undergo FPIC. Thus, they need to show they are worth the social license as early as now.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, headed by Secretary Toni Yulo-Loyzaga, has invoked technicalities that enable bilyonaryo Joseph Sy to proceed with his controversial mining project in Palawan, despite widespread opposition from residents, environmentalists, and tribal and Church....

"The Philippines can replicate what Indonesia has done on a smaller scale," Nicholas Mapa, an ING Bank senior economist based in Manila, told S&P Global Commodity Insights. "Even if the Philippines doesn't go all the way into EV production, as long as they're supplying batteries ... or at least the finished product from nickel ore, I think that will be a positive for the country."

"We want to move out from being just part of the supply chain. We want to be part of the value chain," Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Antonia Yulo Loyzaga said in an interview with Bloomberg on Jan. 30.

The Philippines aims to ban or tax nickel ore exports to replicate Indonesia's success in shifting away from raw material exports to higher value-added finished products. But developing refining and processing capacity will be challenging.

ENVIRONMENT Secretary Maria Antonia Y. Loyzaga said mining must be regulated in a “balanced” way to both protect the environment and raise revenue for the government to support the economic recovery.

“We need minerals. How we balance that really depends our understanding of the complexities of the different contexts that we are actually faced with. We cannot choose just one approach. We need to be sensitive to everything else that is going on,” Ms. Loyzaga said during the Mindanao leg of a consultation with mining stakeholders in Cagayan de Oro City last week.
