In structural engineering, the process of “pouring” concrete into a formed beam is part of what’s called cast-in-place concrete construction. Rebar installation for the foundation was carried out, along with the simultaneous layout and installation of the water supply line and sanitary drainage line. A polyethylene sheet (moisture/v***r barrier) was also installed.

Why these are important: Rebar provides tensile strength to concrete, preventing cracking and structural failure. Proper installation of water supply and sanitary lines ensures efficient serviceability and avoids costly rework or leaks after concreting. The polyethylene v***r barrier minimizes moisture intrusion, protecting the slab from deterioration, reducing mold risk, and helping preserve the integrity of both the concrete and embedded reinforcement.

Trivia: Prior to installing the polyethylene sheet for slab-on-grade construction, a granular base layer (gravel bedding) is typically placed and compacted to improve drainage and load distribution. This is followed by the application of a soil termiticide to mitigate termite infestation risks before placing the v***r barrier. In some Filipino construction practices, a traditional ritual known as “blood offering” (pagpapadugo) is also performed as a cultural belief for safety and good fortune during construction.
