Congratulations to the four UM staff members who are participating in the International Erasmus+ Staff Week at Daugavpils University in Latvia from May 18–22, 2026.

Dr. Tessie G. Miralles, Director of UM Digos College, Ms. Brigida E. Bacani, Head of the Learning and Information Center, Ms. Vanessa Jean B. Bacus, Technical Assistant of the External Relations and International Affairs Office, and Engr. Jetron J. Adtoon, Assistant Research Coordinator of the College of Engineering Education, join more than 40 staff participants from 16 countries in this one-week international training hosted by Daugavpils University. Notably, UM is the only Philippine institution participating in the program.

During their stay in Daugavpils, the participants will engage in workshops and conferences on “Intensive Latvian Culture and Language” and “Smart Borders: Digital Innovation and Security.” They will also explore the city through guided tours, while building international linkages through meetings, lectures, and networking activities with fellow participants from different countries.

Researchers, project leaders, and collaborating teams gathered today, May 14, 2026, at the Cagliari Hall for the second phase of the Leveraging Expertise to Advance and Develop (LEAD) Research Grant Proposals for the 2026 DOST Call initiative, a capability-building session aimed at enhancing the quality and competitiveness of research proposals for submission to the Department of Science and Technology 2026 funding cycle.

The session focused on equipping participants with essential competencies in proposal development through discussions on the review of DOST guidelines for full proposals, structuring strong research proposals, refining research objectives and scope, and addressing existing research gaps through collaborative group discussions. Participants also engaged in workshops on developing robust methodology sections, preparing work plans and Gantt charts, and identifying target deliverables aligned with project outcomes.

A sharing session on refining research methodologies further encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration and constructive feedback among participating teams, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to advancing innovative, relevant, and impact-driven research initiatives.

The activity forms part of the continuing efforts to strengthen research excellence and improve the readiness of project proponents in securing external funding support for high-impact research and development endeavors.

University of Mindanao was buzzing with innovation and purpose last 𝘼𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙡 27, 2026, as we officially commenced our 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙮 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝 celebration! The morning session was a dynamic showcase of creativity and strategic protection, designed to empower our academic community to transform their breakthroughs into legally secured assets. The program opened with a powerful call to innovation from 𝘿𝙧. 𝙆𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙜, setting an inspired tone for the day. This was followed by an essential deep dive into institutional security with 𝙈𝙨. 𝘿𝙮𝙡𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙞, who detailed the 𝙄𝙋 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙄𝙋 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙮, providing our researchers and creators with a clear roadmap for safeguarding their work. The momentum continued with an engaging lecture on 𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙮 by 𝙈𝙧. 𝙅𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙞 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙯, which highlighted how strategic branding serves as a vital tool for both market success and intellectual protection.

Another highlight was the Startup Talk led by 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙧. 𝙅𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤 𝙅𝙤𝙨𝙝𝙪𝙖 𝙊𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙨, featuring the enterprising incubatees of the UMasenso Hub. Hearing these young founders share their firsthand experiences in scaling ventures within the university's ecosystem was a testament to the real-world impact of protected innovation!

We also took a moment to celebrate our sharpest minds by awarding the winners of our IP Trivia Challenge, who proved that staying informed is the first step to winning the game of innovation! The session concluded with a formal awarding of certificates and closing remarks from 𝘿𝙧. 𝙅𝙤𝙚𝙡 𝙏𝙖𝙣, celebrating a successful start to this landmark event.

As 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙄𝙋 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝 comes to a close, the University of Mindanao 𝙄𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙊𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚 (𝙄𝙏𝙎𝙊) reflects on a month defined by intensive advocacy and the shared goal of protecting intellectual breakthroughs. Throughout April, under the strategic leadership of the ITSO Manager and the dedicated efforts of the staff, the office successfully conducted a series of 𝙄𝙋 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 to ensure the value of innovation is recognized and secured across various disciplines.

The office was privileged to engage with a vibrant community of students from 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡, 𝙈𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙀𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜, as well as the 𝙀𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 program. Extending this mission beyond the university walls, the ITSO team fostered collaborative spirits of intellectual property awareness at the 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 - 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤 and the 𝘿𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙤 𝙙𝙚𝙡 𝙎𝙪𝙧 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚. By equipping participants—from students to faculty and researchers—with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of patents, trademarks, and copyright, the office ensures that the region's creative and intellectual output remains protected and competitive in the global landscape.

These outreach initiatives stand as a cornerstone of the university's commitment to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). To continue this momentum, the UM ITSO offers these specialized seminars and training to interested parties. Institutions or organizations wishing to enhance their IP literacy may formally request a session by emailing the office at 𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙣_𝙞𝙩𝙨𝙤@𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤.𝙚𝙙𝙪.𝙥𝙝.
