HAPPENING NOW: The Department of Science and Technology Western Visayas (DOST Western Visayas), through the Regional Research and Development Council (RRDIC VI) and the Western Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (WVCIEERD), advances initiatives to strengthen the region’s natural fiber and textile sector through a session to refine the Western Visayas Natural Fiber and Textile Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Agenda and Roadmap.

Anchored on RDC VI Resolution No. 166, series of 2025, titled “Approving the Formulation of the Western Visayas Regional Natural Fiber and Textile Innovation Agenda,” the initiative underscores the region’s commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and industry growth.

This activity was participated by key stakeholders from government, academe, and industry and builds on the groundwork laid during the workshop held on February 19–20, 2026, which initiated the development of a comprehensive RDI agenda alongside a five-year strategic roadmap for the region.

It aims to identify priority and implementable RDI projects, enhance the coherence and responsiveness of the agenda, and finalize a strategic and actionable roadmap aligned with regional development goals and industry needs.

Through strengthened collaboration and shared expertise, the initiative marks a significant step toward positioning Western Visayas as a center for innovation in natural fibers and textiles, supporting sustainable development and economic growth in the region. 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐔𝐀𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦! 🍉

Huge congratulations to our very own Ms. Danica Marie Aposaga, PFT, Director of Integrated Research Centers (IRC), Asst. Prof. Jessebel V. Gadot, RCh, PFT, Laboratory Officer of Centralized Analytical Testing Laboratory (CATL), and Ms. Jemaica Labus, Analyst of CATL, for being hailed as the 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 at the Agritech Grand Prix 2026, hosted by Leave a Nest Philippines on March 11 at Quezon City University, Novaliches, Quezon City.

Their winning innovation, WamPow (Watermelon Powder), turns watermelon waste into a powerful food preservative and additive—boosting farmers’ income while promoting healthier food options for consumers. On top of the Grand Prize, they also secured the prestigious 𝐂𝐏𝐔𝐆𝐀𝐃 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 from Central Philippine University.

Out of numerous applicants nationwide, the team was shortlisted as one of the Top 9 finalists to pitch before an international panel of experts. This milestone was achieved through the collaborative support of the Innovation Promotion Unit (IPU), Research, Extension, and Innovation (REI) Hamtic Campus, IRC, and CATL.

WamPow is a proud product of the Watermelon Project, funded by DOST-PCIEERD RRI and supported by DOST-VI and WVCIEERD.
