Small Facility — But Load Flow Still Matters

Visited a small commercial facility with a common issue:

Lights were flickering, motors slowing down, and breakers randomly tripping.

Running a load flow analysis in ETAP, we found the real problem:
Undervoltage at the far end of the system

Cause:
• Long cable runs
• Undersized conductors
• Load imbalance

Even in small facilities, poor load distribution can lead to:

• Equipment inefficiency
• Overheating of cables
• Higher power losses
• Shortened equipment life

Solution implemented:
• Adjusted load distribution
• Recommended proper cable sizing
• Balanced phase loading

The generator kept tripping but there was no fault.

A facility complained that their generator breaker kept tripping every time the power transferred to backup. The first assumption was equipment failure.
But after modeling the system in ETAP, the real cause appeared. There was no fault.
The breaker’s instantaneous setting was too low, so the normal motor and transformer inrush during transfer was enough to trip the generator breaker.
A simple adjustment to the protection settings solved the issue.
No equipment replacement.
No generator repair.
Just proper power system analysis.

⚡ Is Your Electrical System Really Safe? ⚡

Many buildings install breakers and panels without checking the *actual fault current* of the system.

When a major fault happens, underrated breakers can fail or cause a total power shutdown.
With a professional Power System Study using ETAP, we can verify:
✔ Short Circuit Fault Levels
✔ Breaker Interrupting Capacity
✔ Protection Coordination (prevent whole-building blackout)
✔ Arc Flash Hazard for worker safety

Big Advantages:
• Prevent equipment damage
• Improve system reliability
• Increase electrical safety
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards

If your facility has 1600A–4000A main panels, generators, or solar systems, a power system analysis is highly recommended.

This 2500A Breaker Would Have Exploded During a Fault

Recently reviewed a commercial building distribution system.
Main panel rating: 2500A
Installed breaker interrupting capacity: 25kA

After running a short circuit analysis, the available fault current at the MSB was: 41.8 kA
That means during a major fault, the breaker could fail catastrophically.
Why did this happen?

Because the breaker rating was selected based on typical values, not actual system calculations.

Factors that increased the fault level:
• Utility fault contribution
• Low transformer impedance
• Short cable distance from transformer to MSB
After modeling the system using ETAP, the recommendation was to upgrade the main breaker to 50kAIC.

Lesson learned:
Never assume fault levels. Always calculate them.
