Everybody thanks the teachers. Almost nobody thanks the person who knows how you take your food.

At a school commencement in Providence, Rhode Island in June, Philip Spradlin walked in his cap and gown across to Deon Lucas, who works in the dining hall, and hugged her.

The school photographer caught it. Spradlin with his arms around her. Lucas with her eyes shut and tears running. The picture went around social media within a day and was picked up nationally.

He had been a student there since sixth grade. She had been feeding him the entire time.

She describes her day as being on her feet from seven in the morning until four in the afternoon, hearing her own name called all day long. Miss Deon. Miss Deon.

Her explanation for why she does it the way she does is nine words. You never know what people are going through.

And his explanation for why she mattered is the thing every teenager understands and no adult remembers. It is nice to have adults on campus who aren't grading you. They're just genuinely looking out for you.

He said he was thrilled to be receiving and giving so much love an hour before he collected his diploma.
