NEWS I CEn Faculty Clinches 1st Place in the 2022 National Invention Contest and Exhibits
Engr. Christopher S. Pascual, faculty from the College of Engineering (CEn) and hydroponics and aeroponics expert, clinched First Place for the Banghay Award under the Outstanding Industrial Design category during the 2022 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) held on June 22-24, 2021 via Facebook Live.
His winning entry entitled “ground heat exchanger (GHE) system for aeroponics” is a technology that utilizes ground temperature to dissipate heat to maintain a cooler root zone for plants resulting in better growth and development and an increase in yield.
According to Engr. Pascual the GHE system is being used in western countries to increase or decrease the room temperature during winter and summer, respectively. But in CLSU, they utilized it for producing high-value crops such as strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and leafy vegetables among others.
Engr. Pascual will receive Php 200,000.00 cash prize from the Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) for winning first place.
Moreover, he will also be given a gold medal from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in recognition of his invaluable contribution to national wealth and development.
“We will continue to develop and design innovative technologies that have great potential in contributing to food sufficiency,” said Engr. Pascual when asked for his plans.
He also added that it is high time to incorporate more digitalization or the internet of things when developing technologies for efficient crop production especially now that there is a looming food crisis.
Meanwhile, University President Edgar A. Orden commended Engr. Pascual for the award he received and mentioned that inventions like the GHE system will be supported by the university especially if it contributes to achieving the sustainable development goals, particularly the zero hunger.
In 2021, the GHE system for aeroponics won in the Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits which paved the way for the invention to enter the national level.
NICE is a competition spearheaded by the DOST-TAPI which recognizes the best and the brightest Filipino inventions, innovations, and research in the Philippines, as these research and development outputs and results, contribute to national development.
