A recent study found that combining the probiotic 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 with silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) can improve the growth, immune response, gut microbiota, and disease resistance of Asian seabass (𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳).

The findings highlight the potential of nanoparticle-integrated probiotics as an innovative and microbiome-targeted approach to sustainable aquaculture health management.

𝗦𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗠𝗼!

This September, we celebrate the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 (MANA Mo), a time to recognize the Philippines’ rich maritime heritage and deepen our appreciation of the seas and aquatic resources that sustain our nation.

In celebration, DA-NFRDI has lined up a series of activities to engage the public, raise awareness, and spark meaningful conversations on our country’s maritime and archipelagic concerns.

Anchored on this year’s theme, “𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻, 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮-𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗮𝗻,” we are reminded that protecting our maritime rights goes hand in hand with caring for our seas and responsibly managing our aquatic resources.

Let’s celebrate our seas—and do our part to protect them!

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 (𝟑) 𝐁𝐒 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 – 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 (𝐏𝐔𝐏) have successfully completed their 250-hour internship at the DA-NFRDI Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC).

Throughout their internship, FBC became more than just a training ground, it became a space for learning, discovery, and growth. Through field activities, laboratory work, and hands-on training in molecular techniques and equipment, they transformed academic knowledge into meaningful research experience.

Their journey also taught them the value of resilience, teamwork, patience, and learning from challenges, while broadening their understanding of scientific research and fisheries biotechnology.

𝟓 𝐁𝐒 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲–𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 have successfully completed their 320-hour internship at the DA-NFRDI Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC).

Throughout their internship, they gained valuable hands-on experience in fish breeding, cryopreservation, DNA extraction, and other laboratory techniques, strengthening their knowledge and skills in fisheries biotechnology and sustainable aquaculture.

The interns expressed their gratitude to the NFRDI-FBC mentors and staff for their guidance, support, and welcoming learning environment. The experience has further inspired them to pursue careers in fisheries biotechnology and contribute to the development of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in their communities.

𝐍𝐅𝐑𝐃𝐈-𝐅𝐁𝐂 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐁𝐒-𝐓𝐁𝐈 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞-𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐚

The DA-NFRDI Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC) conducted a four-day training on detecting Streptococcus spp. in tilapia on August 11–14, 2026, in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
The training equipped ABS-TBI incubatees from various fisheries and academic institutions with skills in bacterial isolation, DNA extraction, PCR, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Participants also gained hands-on experience in fish necropsy and molecular diagnostics using optimized detection protocols for 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 spp.

FBC Chief Dr. Casiano Choresca and Assistant Chief Dr. Mary Nia Santos served as resource speakers, while FBC technical experts facilitated the laboratory activities.

The activity highlights NFRDI’s commitment to advancing science-based disease detection and strengthening the capacity of technology partners and multipliers under the ABS-TBI Program. Through these efforts, NFRDI supports the adoption of fisheries technologies and contributes to a healthier, more productive, sustainable, and resilient tilapia aquaculture industry in the Philippines.
