With two unproven systems interacting, it becomes difficult to determine whether any anomaly originates from the aircraft, the launcher, or their integration, making troubleshooting and performance evaluation significantly more demanding.

We do not have a creativity problem. In fact, we are quite good at imagining the future and developing advanced concepts.

When we presented our smart drone munition prototype at PFDEX 2023, the concept was among the first of its kind in the field of drone warfare. Three years later, however, we are still struggling to move that idea from the laboratory to industry.

The challenge is not innovation—it is ex*****on. Limited funding and lengthy procurement processes have slowed development. Meanwhile, competitors have surged ahead, backed by substantial R&D investments, efficient Western bureaucracy, and faster decision-making systems.

It is a difficult reality to accept, but it highlights a critical lesson: technological leadership is not determined solely by who has the best ideas, but by who can rapidly transform those ideas into deployable capabilities.

Sadly, this remains one of the major challenges facing innovation in the Philippines.

Japan's defense minister just sat down with a startup that builds military drones out of cardboard.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met with AirKamuy this week — a Nagoya company founded by a 29-year-old aeronautical engineer named Takumi Yamaguchi.

Their flagship product, the AirKamuy 150, costs about $2,000.

It flies 120 km/h, has a 150 km range, carries a 1.5 kg payload, and assembles in five minutes from a flat-packed box with no tools.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is already using them — currently as live-fire training targets, but the next step is surveillance and swarm attacks carrying small bombs.

Koizumi's stated goal is for the Self-Defense Forces to become "the organization that makes the greatest use of unmanned assets in the world."

For a country that, until very recently, didn't even allow universities to do military research — this is a hard pivot.

The Takaichi government just tripled the unmanned-systems budget to ¥312.8 billion.
