Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power

Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power 1180 Mega Watt Power Plant in Bhikki, District Sheikhupura The Project is proceeding on a very fast track to meet its compressed completion timelines.

With a staunch commitment to eliminate the menace of load shedding from the country, the Government of Punjab under the able leadership of the Chief Minister Punjab has taken the initiative of establishing a 1180 Mega Watt Power Plant in Bhikki, District Sheikhupura. The project is being established under the Power Policy 2015 of the Government of Pakistan and is being conceived as one of the lead

ing initiatives with most efficient machines and lowest project cost. The Bhikki plant is scheduled to start simple cycle operations by providing 800 MW of electricity before summer 2017 while the operations on combined cycle mode will commence from winter 2017 which will enhance the production to 1180 MW. The Bhikki Project shall use RLNG as its primary fuel and shall employ the highest efficiency machines to keep the cost of electricity to the end consumer at its bare minimum. The project has negotiated an un-matchably low EPC cost as compared to other like-wise projects in the country. The EPC Contract of the project has been awarded to M/s Harbin Electrical International Company of the People’s Republic of China at a total cost of US$ 539,260,000. The EPC Contractor shall install the most efficient H-series gas turbines at the plant manufactured and guaranteed by the General Electric of USA. At present, no other power plant in the country claims to have so high thermal efficiency and such a low EPC cost. The Long Term Service Agreement (LTSA) is being signed separately between the Project Company and General Electric USA to take care of the operations & maintenance of the gas turbines after the commissioning of the project. The Steam Turbine and all other balance of plant / auxiliary equipment shall also comply with the international standards to ensure sustained quality and efficiency of the project throughout its operational life.

From Technical Expertise to Strategic Insight: Empowering Pakistan’s Next Generation of Energy Professionals

As part of the ongoing six-week internship programme conducted through the Energy Center of Excellence (ECoE), today’s session provided interns with an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the technical and operational dimensions of Pakistan’s power sector at Punjab Thermal Power (Pvt.) Limited (PTPL).

A key highlight of the day was the interns’ direct interaction with senior technical leadership. Building on their practical exposure and learning, the interns engaged in dedicated 40-minute interactive sessions with:

Chief Technical Officer (CTO), PTPL

General Manager Technical, PTPL

Manager Monitoring, PTPL

These interactive sessions provided the interns with a deeper understanding of power plant operations, technical management, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, operational challenges, and the role of technical leadership in ensuring reliable and efficient power generation.

The sessions were not merely presentations. Interns actively participated, raised questions, shared observations, and connected their academic knowledge with real-world technical practices in the energy sector.

Such engagements demonstrate the importance of providing young professionals with direct exposure to experienced industry leaders. Technical education becomes even more meaningful when students have the opportunity to understand how engineering concepts are applied in real operational environments.

The ECoE internship programme continues to bridge the gap between academia and industry by developing not only technically competent graduates, but also professionals equipped with practical knowledge, confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a broader understanding of Pakistan’s energy landscape.

Investing in young professionals today means building a stronger, more capable energy sector for tomorrow.

From the control room to the boardroom: empowering Pakistan’s next generation of energy professionals

Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power (Pvt.) Limited (QATPL) welcomed the first internship batch from UET and UOL to its Head Office as part of the planned six-week internship programme conducted through the Energy Center of Excellence (ECoE).

A defining feature of the day was the interns’ direct interaction with CEO Mr. Rana Abdul Jabbar Khan. Drawing on their five weeks of technical exposure at the 1,180 MW CCPP Bhikki, the interns discussed plant performance, leadership, emerging energy challenges, and the future direction of Pakistan’s power sector.

To give the interns a complete understanding of Head Office decision-making, dedicated 40-minute interactive sessions were conducted with:

* CEO
* Manager Admin (In-charge GM Coordination)
* Manager HR
* CFO
* Corporate Affairs

These sessions exposed the interns to strategic leadership, interdepartmental coordination, professional conduct, human-resource development, financial governance, corporate affairs, and the processes through which technical realities are converted into organizational decisions.

This was not a ceremonial visit. Interns came prepared with technical insights and questions, making every session focused, practical, and genuinely interactive.

Under the leadership of CEO Mr. Rana Abdul Jabbar Khan, QATPL is demonstrating that developing future professionals requires more than technical training—it requires access to leadership, institutional understanding, confidence, and the ability to connect engineering knowledge with responsible decision-making.

The first ECoE internship batch marks an important step in strengthening collaboration between academia and Pakistan’s energy sector.
