The Food and Drug Administration is holding firm that not enough evidence has been gathered to support an approval filing for a closely watched genetic medicine targeting Huntington’s disease, a position that further rattled the treatment’s developer and its shareholders.

Agency staff "strongly recommended" a sham surgery-controlled trial be conducted before an approval filing, a stance one analyst called a "worst case scenario" for UniQure.

Growing older brings a higher risk of serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and dementia. For years, researchers have tackled these conditions individually.

Scientists have built a massive cellular atlas showing how aging reshapes the body across 21 organs. Studying nearly 7 million cells, they found that aging starts earlier than expected and unfolds in a coordinated way throughout the body. About a quarter of cell types change in number over time, and...

Several stable radical chains with multiple nitrogen atoms have now been synthesised, with some persisting at room temperature for several weeks. The researchers behind the work say that this stability may allow such compounds to act as a storable source of nitrenes, a typically hard-to-contain reagent.

These compounds may find uses as nitrene precursors

Transition-metal chemistry has transformed modern organic synthesis, enabling the generation of novel compounds in vitro. Now, biocompatible organometallic reagents have been shown to enable selective transformations in complex biological settings, allowing precise protein modification and profiling...

Future missions to Mars may want to dig into ice rather than rock. Scientists say ancient microbes, or traces of them, could be locked inside Martian ice deposits, preserved for tens of millions of years.

Mars’ frozen ice caps may be time capsules for ancient life. Lab experiments show that key building blocks of proteins can survive tens of millions of years in pure ice, even under relentless cosmic radiation. Ice mixed with Martian-like soil, however, destroys organic material far more quickly. T...

The best foods for blood pressure contain potassium, magnesium, fiber, and antioxidants. These nutrients help relax blood vessels and balance sodium.

Eating beets can help lower blood pressure, but foods like spinach, yogurt, and beans may offer even greater heart-protective benefits.

Researchers are engineering bacteria to invade tumors and consume them from the inside. Because tumor cores lack oxygen, they’re the perfect breeding ground for these microbes. The team added a genetic tweak that helps the bacteria survive longer near oxygen-exposed edges — but only once enough ...

Scientists found that older muscle stem cells slow down because they build up a protein that favors survival over speed. Turning it off makes aged cells act young again — but at the risk of burning out the stem cell pool. Credit: Shutterstock

A UCLA study in mice reveals that aging muscle stem cells accumulate a protein that slows repair but boosts survival. This protein, NDRG1, acts like a brake, preventing cells from activating quickly after injury. When researchers blocked it in older mice, muscle healing sped up dramatically — but ...
