Lesson 10: Reading Construction Drawings
Drawings are the language of construction. Learn to read them before you build.
πŸ“ Plan view: top-down layout of rooms, walls, and doors
πŸ“ Elevation: side view showing heights and the outside look
πŸ“ Section: a slice through the building showing foundations, floors, and roof
πŸ“ Scale: at 1:100, 1 cm on paper equals 1 m in real life
πŸ“ Dimensions: always follow the written numbers, never measure the paper
πŸ“ Legend: check the symbols for doors, windows, and materials
πŸ“ Title block: confirm the project name, scale, and latest revision
Read the whole drawing set before you start, and ask if anything is unclear.

Site Safety Basics
Safety comes before speed, cost, and schedule.
βœ… Wear PPE every time: hard hat, boots, vest, gloves, glasses
βœ… Use guardrails and harnesses when working at height
βœ… Shore or slope trench walls
βœ… Treat all wires as live
βœ… Stay clear of moving machines and lifting loads
βœ… Keep walkways clear and tidy
βœ… Know your exits and first aid, and report every near miss
If it isn't safe, stop and fix it first.

πŸ—οΈ Lesson 8: Steel Reinforcement
Concrete is very strong when it is pressed, but weak when it is pulled. That is why we add steel bars.
1️⃣ Why steel? Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension.
2️⃣ Steel carries tension: the bars take the pulling forces.
3️⃣ Good bond: ribbed bars grip the concrete tightly.
4️⃣ Cover protects: concrete cover keeps the bars from rust.
πŸ’‘ Remember: place the bars in the correct position and keep the right cover (usually between 20 mm and 50 mm, depending on the element). Bars that touch the formwork can rust and weaken the member.
Have you seen rusted bars on an old building? Tell us in the comments πŸ‘‡

πŸ—οΈ Lesson 7: Types of Cement
Not all cement is the same. Choosing the right type makes your structure stronger and longer lasting.
1️⃣ OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement): general use for beams, slabs and columns.
2️⃣ PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement): durable, with less heat of hydration.
3️⃣ SRC (Sulphate-Resisting Cement): for soil and water that contain sulphates.
4️⃣ Rapid hardening cement: gains strength fast when you need quick work.
πŸ’‘ Always check the grade and expiry date on the bag, and store cement off the ground in a dry place.
Which cement do you use most on your site? Tell us in the comments πŸ‘‡

πŸ—οΈ Lesson 6: Curing of Concrete
Pouring concrete is only half the job. Curing decides how strong it becomes.
Curing means keeping concrete moist so the cement can keep reacting and gaining strength.
1️⃣ Start early: begin as soon as the surface has set.
2️⃣ Keep it moist: spray water, use wet burlap, or pond water on the surface.
3️⃣ Cure 7 days or more: at least 7 days, longer in hot weather.
4️⃣ Protect it: shield from sun, wind and heavy loads.
πŸ’‘ Concrete that dries too fast can crack and lose strength. Good curing costs very little but adds a lot of durability.
Do you cure your concrete properly? Tell us in the comments πŸ‘‡

Concrete Basics (Lesson 5)
It follows naturally after the foundation and load path posts, since concrete is the material that carries those loads.
Post text (copy and paste):
πŸ—οΈ Lesson 5: What Is Concrete Made Of?
Concrete is the most used construction material in the world. It has 4 main ingredients:
1️⃣ Cement: the binder that glues everything together.
2️⃣ Sand (fine aggregate): fills the small gaps.
3️⃣ Gravel (coarse aggregate): gives strength and bulk.
4️⃣ Water: starts the chemical reaction (hydration) that hardens the mix.
πŸ’‘ Remember:
Too much water makes concrete weaker.
Curing (keeping it moist for 7 days or more) is just as important as the mix.
A common mix ratio for general work is 1 : 2 : 4 (cement : sand : gravel).

Site Safety: 6 Pieces of Gear for Every Site Visit 🦺
Safety comes before speed, cost, and schedule. Never enter a site without these:
1️⃣ Hard Hat: protects your head from falling objects
2️⃣ Safety Boots: protect your feet from heavy objects and nails
3️⃣ High-Vis Vest: makes you visible to machines and drivers
4️⃣ Gloves: protect your hands from cuts, burns, and chemicals
5️⃣ Safety Glasses: shield your eyes from dust and flying debris
6️⃣ Harness: prevents falls when working at height
A good engineer always goes home safe. πŸ’ͺ

It shows 6 common steel items in colorful cards: rebar, I-beam, angle, channel, steel plate, and hollow section.
Here is the caption:
Steel Basics: 6 Steel Items Every Civil Engineer Should Know πŸ”©
Steel is everywhere on a construction site. Here are 6 common types:
1️⃣ Rebar: steel bars inside concrete that resist tension
2️⃣ I-Beam: shaped to carry bending loads efficiently
3️⃣ Angle: L-shaped section used in frames and bracing
4️⃣ Channel: C-shaped section used in framing and supports
5️⃣ Steel Plate: flat sheets used for connections and base plates
6️⃣ Hollow Section: square or round tubes that resist twisting well
Concrete is strong when squeezed, and steel is strong when pulled. Together they make reinforced concrete. πŸ’ͺ
Which steel section have you seen on a site? Tell us in the comments! πŸ‘‡

It shows 4 foundations in colorful cards, labeled shallow or deep: isolated footing, strip footing, raft foundation, and pile foundation. A blue banner at the bottom gives a quick rule of thumb.
Here is the caption:
Foundation Types: 4 Foundations Every Civil Engineer Should Know πŸ—οΈ
The foundation carries the whole building's weight to the ground. Here are 4 common types:
🟠 Isolated Footing (shallow): supports a single column, common in firm soil
🟑 Strip Footing (shallow): a continuous strip under a wall, common for houses
🟒 Raft Foundation (shallow): one large slab under the whole building, good for weak soil
πŸ”΄ Pile Foundation (deep): long columns driven deep to reach strong soil or rock
Weak soil near the surface? Go deeper or spread wider. πŸ’ͺ
Which foundation have you seen on a site? Tell us in the comments! πŸ‘‡
