In 1920s, pilots used to strap Passengers with parachutes before flight. Safety Instruction cards emerged first in the 1930s with textual information only and no identification of exit locations. Also text was tailored using fancy words to calm terrified passengers. Later standard regulations started and after 2000s in cabin standard cabin briefings started.

Shades remain open during take off and landing to have actual understanding of the outside environment like light, terrain around and possible hazards.
